Default LPG Shortage

I've just tried to fill up my dual-fuel XR6 and my closest three service stations had no LPG. Checked the internet expecting to find some news about supply problems and found nothing recent. I'm in Melbourne. What's going on with lpg?

This post in the LPG prices thread may have something to do with it. If the prices have gone up so much, perhaps some retail outlets have decided not to stock it any longer?

I have found if the Service Stations have stopped selling LPG or out of Stock the illuminated price displays are turned off for LPG or display $00.00.
What you could also check if your local LPG Servos are part of the large oil companies go to their web site. I used to go a certain station in my area for LPG and one day I went there no LPG.
The cashier said it would be back soon anyway no gas for a month.
Checked on the company website the site was listed as no longer selling LPG.

I have one servo that sells LPG near me, it's only about 8km away, but the V8 Jeep sucks it down in just over 200km, so I've just been running on ULP. I've just got the gas tank certified for another 10 years a year ago, too. Oh well!

Yep, less servos supplying it.
A site gets revamped and when back up running there is no LPG.
My closest couple to home are without LPG and the one further down gave me a scare the other day when the LPG nozzles had bright red Out of Action flags on them (thankfully a short maintenance issue).
This servo never adjusts the LPG price...it has sat untouched on 93.5c/L for nearly 2 years if not longer.

I guess there's less and less demand as no, or very few new conversions are being added any more. It's a bit betamax if you ask me

The BP stations around here are slowly going through renos, LPG gone from the ones that have been completed.

Lot of servo's will not maintain LPG installations once they near their service life, since demand for LPG is dropping servo's will phase them out due to prohibitive costs.

New BP reno in Sunbury has LPG and same with the new United servo in Campbellfield - there's still a lot of availability in Melbourne north/north western suburbs.

Notice OP is in Glenroy - what areas did you go? You'll usually have luck in Broadmeadows for LPG.

Tuggerah Metro, NSW Central Coast, one of the few around here, at 95.9 c/litre.

My usual is Metro in Pascoe Vale Road, Glenroy but it is not uncommon for one of the nozzles to be out of action on their sole lpg bowser. Then I tried Caltex in Glenroy, but no luck. Then I tried Caltex Broadmeadows with no luck. I stupidly filled up the petrol tank there (why did I reward them for having no lpg?). The next day I found lpg at 7 Eleven, Pascoe Vale.

PS I have since crashed my beloved XR6 so it is off the road for a while, with nearly full tanks of lpg and petrol! I am getting my dear old Dad's BA factory gas wagon back on the road - only 173,000 kms.

LPG demand is dropping fast! I reckon its because the TAXI industry has completely moved away from Falcons on gas

Just more than falcons on gas, but I'm quite sure Hybrids are the go for the Taxi industry which would be the decline of gas cabs.

Over the past couple of year, I've noticed a surprising number of new or rebuilt servos being opened up around our area. Vibe, Burk, Metro, and now Atlas.
All big, shiny, and new. Mostly with multi-outlet bowsers dispensing 3 types of petrol and two types of diesel.
But sadly, NONE of these new builds have LPG.

The Problem in WA comes from a culmination of several issues:
  • During the Boom Years for LPG in WA, basic conversions were free, thanks to State and Federal subsidies.
  • Unfortunately, as they always do, the subsidies drove up costs, so that when they were removed, the conversion industry collapsed.
  • LPG came from two captive sources. The Kwinana Oil Refinery, and Westfarmers's pipeline extraction plant. This pushed prices downwards.
  • Then Wesfarmers built an export terminal to export their product, pushing local prices up much closer to parity.
  • Then the Oil Refinery was shut down, thanks to the muppet labor government. That left everyone at the mercy of one supplier.
  • Then Wesfarmers quit the distribution business altogther. As far as I know, the only bulk LPG supplier is now Supagas, which has to buy it from Wesfarmers
