Hey guys,
I'm thinking about getting an EF or EL to use as a daily driver. Just wondering if the EL has much over the EF and which you guys think is the better model. I'm not realy interested in turning it into a show car or quarter mile beast, I'm just after something to cruise to work and back in. Also, apart from trip computers and electical stuff, is there much advantage to going a fairmont over a futura? Cheers

no advantage if you go fairmont over futura, except said luxuries. However, fairmonts are not that much more expensive than futura's now, so might be worth going a fairmont.
I'd go EL Fairmont (gorgeous front end, and great interior), but i'm biased!

I didnt really think there are much mechanical differences other than EF with coil pack, and EL with Dizzy...
So either is a winner in my books.

I would not aim for one over the other; just aim for something which has been looked after as well as possible!

I would personally go the EL futura because of the cruise control and ABS (Bosch 5.3 ABS module) And would go for the EL instead of the EF because of the better improved shock absorber valving, new stabilizer bar insulation rubbers, 8% softer rear springs, Watts link pivot point on rear axel relocated 20mm lower for a lower roll center, 5mm side glass (replacing 3mm in EF) for added wind noise suppression and a security increase, just an overall better quality ride.

Thanks for the replies guys. :
At the moment i am looking at an ef with about 120,000 on the clock or an el with about 150,000 on it. After checking out the e-series website and reading the "buying tips EF to EL" im certain that both are excelent buys. (Buy the way, who ever wrote that "buyers tips" section, i would just like to give you a big thankyou! ) Now i actually know about the non tickford models! :P One thing that has surprised me is the GLI and futura models, man you get alot of car for your money! I mean you expect power mirrors and airbags on fairmonts but not on entry level cars! awesome.

Try for an EFII/EL Ghia if your money can stretch that far.. Tickford goodies and luxury to boot

el is a cheeper version of ef. ef has multi-coils and fires injectors as three sets of two injectors at a time, el has distributer, and fires in two sets of three injectors at a time. El has an unreliable auto mainly due to the fact that it has no dipstick so you cannot top up or check fluid, ef is the go for the driveline mate. Ef's look sexier at the front with their flatter bonnet and sleek nose. As for the rear roll center issue, you can just fit an el diff cover. GO AN EF!!!!!!!!!

How do I explain that to the Missus????? How is the normal "Average Joe" supposed to be able to check Tranny fluid???? P.s. These Forums are awesome. I used to own a Nissan Exa, Recently sold it to fund the EL Futura (Money well spent), stumbled across these forums (I was actually looking for them) and I am impressed with the ground everyone covers. |

EL is always going to be better simply because it's a later model! I'm sure the Ford engineers didn't look at the EF and say "oh well were on a winner here lets just leave everything the same for the EL."
If you like the look of they EL's then get one of them for sure. |

id go for an EL futura or EF Futura, dont look at the gli's, there just some things that they dont have that futuras do.
My pick is the EL as you get body coloured strips right around the car, ABS was standard, back seat headrest, the EL futura sapphires got driver and passenger airbags as standard, Futura seat trim looks heaps better than gli's. |

You can't beat the EL, the last of the series is always the best.
