is he into music? boys usually like drums... you can get a reasonably good (for a young beginner) kit for around 500 bucks. Or maybe a quite good second hand set for 800 or something. Thatll keep him interested as he goes through all the different music fads that goes around the high schools these days.

It used to be possible to by ring-tones for mobiles, it was a type of pre-paid voucher to download the lasest music - I'm a luddite with ANYTHING audio/visual/telephonic/polyphonic whatever, but if you can still buy them I believe they're quite inexpensive.
