Default Shillings

I was cleaning some things up and as I picked this up, it caught my eye, at first I thought it was a NZ 10c piece but I took a closer look and it says One Shilling on one side. On the reverse it says New Zealand 1967. What im hoping is maybe someone might be able to tell me if its real and if it may be worth anything.

Its real, not worth a heap though. Its from before NZ went to decimal currency. Oddly enough it would have been one of the last ones as NZ went to decimal currency in 1967

I thought I was onto a "fortune" about 5 years ago , we were getting Reno's done to our house , it's a real "bitza" , 2 middle rooms are granite (1861) Kitchen/dining added on pre 1900 (enclosed veranda , extra veranda added behind at the same time) and so on .

5 years ago we added a 8' x 40' bit up the side and when we were pulling the outside kitchen wall out here it was ..a."1901 Queen Victoria Half Penny"

Brain say's "Wow , Reno's paid for , New car , cash in the bank , bla , bla , bla ." :

After checking a couple of coin shops in Sydney , eBay etc. it was worth a "whole $4-50 to $4-95 , well it was a good dream for a 1/2 hour anyway

That coin is probably quite collectable as its a change over coin. The shilling was 12 pence. It was replaced in 1967 by the 10 cent coin. That has a 10 on it as well as being a shilling. So its both a 10 cent and 12 pence (1 shilling) coin. I dont know a lot about coins but I would say that style was only minted for one year.

I have had maybe 2 of those coins over the past few years, so a handful have managed to stay in circulation.
But last year all of the cent coins were withdrawn from circulation and replaced with a smaller design so they should be extremely hard to come by now.

Theres an breif history on NZ dollar and cent coins here:
http://www.answers.com/topic/coins-o...zealand-dollar

It says when they changed over to decimal currency the 10c had the words 'One Shilling'. It was minted from 1967 to 1969 then the words were deleted.

Sorry to break it to ya, but it's worth sweet fa. It's in very poor condition and those things are everywhere. Most post 1966-1967 Australian and NZ coins aren't worth much at all unless you've got rarer stuff, like a perfect, uncirculated 1997 10c coin which is worth around $50-60 because they "only" minted 5,700,000.

If you ever come across a 1930 Penny or 1923 Half Penny though, depending on the condition, you could either place an order for a new, fully optioned GT-P or be set for life! They're worth a packet!
