Where did these silly superstitions come from?

Like walking under a ladder, a black cat crosses your path, breaking a mirror.

I've done all these on numerous occasions... nothing bad has ever come of it.

Yeah, I think the cat one is witch related. No idea on the ones like mirrors and ladders etc.

These are really old world notions. As far as I know,

Walking under a ladder is really a safety thing. Its bad luck when the handyman up said ladder drops his hammer etc while youre walking underneath it.

Mirrors once upon a time were extremely costly. The maids etc would need to work 7 years to pay for one if they broke it.

well if you sleep with them on your face you will be blind till you take them off

but as for the braking a mirror .... load of rubish i did one the other day and didnt get 7 years bad luck , i got me self a good lawyer and he got me of with only 3 years bad luck

The Ancients attributed mystic powers to any reflective surface, solid or liquid, because the reflection was considered part of the soul. Heavy taboos were laid on the act of disturbing water into which a person was gazing because shattering the image meant danger to the soul. Hence the similar taboo on breaking a mirror, now said to bring seven years' bad luck.

My mum thinks the ladder one has something to do with the fact that a ladder leaning on a wall makes a triangle with the wall and the ground and that the symbol of a triangle represented life in some historic culture. Walking through 'breaks' the triangle and that means it is 'breaking' life.

Or something like that. You know what... Google would probably help here. If I could be bothered I would look it up to check.

Some of these are really true and have given me bad luck....
I've walked under a ladder and had a car crash;
I've broken a mirror and had a nasty fall at work;
A black cat has crossed my path and my first car was a Holden;
I've slept with my socks on and the missus has beaten the crap out of me for it;
I pulled a silly face when I was young and have lived with it ever since

Opening an umbrella inside.... Well I can see it potentially causing damage, maybe that's the bad luck ingredient?

Crossing knives.... My Mum hated that one.... Maybe this could be contibuted to dualing with swords, and an inevitable death?

The theory has truth Im guessing, not that Im saying there is any point to it though. The Burley Griffiths who designed Canberra put a large central piece in a church they designed too which was a large collection of triangles making larger triangles, it was on SBS a day or two ago, some Architecture program, they commented on the masonic connection to the triangles.

Yeh, they're a sick bunch the Freemasons (the one's above the 33rd degree that is)...have a look at the US dollar note, it's got the pyramid (all-seeing eye) on it aswell. Coincidence??
