Just wondering if there were any vego's or vegans on here? Or even people who choose to eat organic local produce instead of supermarket/fast food.
I've got a few vegan friends and the food is actually real good, been eating a bit with them lately. I've also started buying organic produce as i'd prefer to know what I buy, and not eat meat that came from a cage or similar. Being in the outer suburbs fruit and veg is easy for me to get, and things such as organic meat from cattle that are grass fed in paddocks can be home delivered for not bad a price (fruit and veg can too). Me and my mates have decided when we move out we'll get all meat delivered in bulk (once a month) and fruit and veg weekly (or go pick some up), as we don't want to get stuck on take away like others. Anyone else think along the same lines? My reason's are based around animal cruelty and environment mainly, but thought i'd post it up as i'm sure there's family members (ie. parents) on here as well who don't have the time to shop (mine don't) yet want to keep there kids healthy, I reckon it's a good way. And for any of the greenies interested, a single glass of milk takes 4000 glasses of water to make and a kilo of beef needs between 50,000 to 100,000 litres of water... So much for not watering your lawn, and i'll keep taking long showers and save the steak one night ;) PS. I'm not a hippy and I hate PETA, just thought there might be some people interested or with a veg lifestyle on here.

I'm a meat lover, and I know that vegan diet is NOT healthy - people (kids especially) need animal amino acids in their diet.
However, I'd feel better knowing that the steak I'm consuming was happily running down a paddock the day before.

Due to medical issues I am on a strict organic, vegetarian diet. I do miss eating meat although I do eat Fish. The hardest thing I have found is sourcing Organic goods. ( I am currently going through Chemo 3 days a week so the less chemicals the better!)
The produce is normally twice the price and not as good quality...but I will take that over toxins anyday! 20yrs ago there were not that many farmers spraying their crops with chemicals and there were not that many cases of cancer reported. Maybe medical science had not caught up or maybe it is the chemical that we eat and breathe that has increased the rate of cancer. I am not a bio-chemist...I have no idea. All I know is my body...I will control what goes into it! I have found that most vegetarian food is not only delicious, but is great for your weight too! Best of luck on your new lifestyle choice.

The wife is vegetarian boarding on vegan so I have basically going her also. I tell you i feel alot better for not eating meat. My cholestrol (spelling) has dropped heaps because of it and I don't actually miss eating meat. I find if i do have some it tastes funny.
But saying this we have not made our kids be vegetarian. When they are old enough to decide for themselves they can but until then we cook them some meat. I agree with the cost of these types of foods. its stupid how it costs more to look after yourself. |

I had a crack at it, because the ex was a Vego and i couldnt stand her whining (abit under the thumb?
Anyways, for those 3 weeks or so, i felt like crap basically. But that first big mac was absolute heaven... I do however respect people for sticking to it though.

alecrain - sorry, but the amino acid/protein myth has LONG being proven wrong. As long as they know what they're eating the lifestyle is perfectly healthy.
Geez Louise - we get most of our organic fruit and veg from the wandin and surrounding area, it's a bit more expensive but it's usually real good quality. Not too bad a drive from Croydon. Sounds a rough trot but good to see you're on top of it all. blueyba - good that you're supportive of the other half. To help save some costs you can also grow your own food easily if you have the space, we've got a small veggie patch with easy things to grow such as carrots etc. Nothing to rely on especially all year round but it's good to have.

The wife is vegan, she is also 13 weeks pregnant, and still on a vegan diet, the fact that she's lactose intolerant doesn't help, we have veggies 5 out of 7 night's a week, chick peas (I love them raw), corn, cauliflower, brockley, brussle sprouts, and spuds are the 6 main things we eat plus brown rice, pasta.
The only supplement that the wife does take is calcium, and thats due to her being lactose intolerant. we also have a great restaurant that we go to, http://www.vegiebar.com.au/

I turned veggie 4 years ago and couldnt be healthier. I've dropped 50 kilos and am as fit as ever. I'm not small, I do take protein supplements to maintain around the 100 kilo mark, but its turned to be the best thing to have happened to me health wise.
As for kids needing meat, my mate is 6 feet 3 inch and weighs 100 kilos, plays first grade rugby and also plays 3rd grade cricket for Parramatta and has never once touched meat... go figure...

I couldnt do it, I even eat Raw mince and onions sandwiches!
However.... my father in law is now experiencing alot of stomach problems, particularly from the intestinal tract. He wakes up and sometimes the bed is covered in blood. Now him being a typical German he generally loves his cold meats and red meat- lots of it. Im kinda in the same boat too, my old man is a Very big bloke like me, he also loves his german coldcuts and salamis etc. Him being 15 years behind my father in law and also growing up in the same tradition too (he is german too) he has started getting checked out and found his meat intake was rediculously high. I am on roughly the same track too... Started to make me think about it, though Hops could be considered a vegetable, I know a few brands that make a few beverages containing it, no meat product either!

That much water does not go on a glass of milk, it goes on the cow. Meaning leather as well as meat too. A whole cow would feed a lot of people, when you break it down more water is used on crops. As well as the fact millions of animals are slaughtered by wheat harvesters per year. So any vegetarian who knows that is technically intentionally killing the animals just like us non vegetarians. Unless you ONLY eat vegetables grown in your backyard. It's a good choice for health and lifestyle however if you're only doing it for the morality of protecting animals then it's rather absurd. The animals killed by the harvesters are also left to rot whereas we use the animals and don't let them go to waste. Also a lot of predators are introduced to protect the crops from pests. These predators disrupt the surrounding environment sabotaging the ecosystem. Also many animals such as Deer are considered a pest and are shot by soy farmers.

sorry but i like a good steak with steak on the side and steak for an entre i'm a dedicated carnivor and fortunatly not a slave to HDLP (High density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol)i'm one of the lucky ones that can eat what i like with out having a raised HDLP. red meat is the best source of iron as it is more readily absorbed than vege sources of protein and although HDLP is bad for you LDLP ( low density lipoprotein or good cholesterol) is esential in the diet as it forms the cell walls so as we create new cells to repair the body we need LDLP and meat is one of the best sources of this there are many other benifits of red meat ( admitedly in moderation) but enough of the biology lesson .
if you wish you live this lifestyle thats fine as long as you don't try to preach to those of us who like our lifestyle

yeah we are looking at doing that and its something fun for the kids to do as well. We never preach to anyone that being vegetarian is better but I have noticed that people who aren't give you heaps about it. Its almost like they're insecure. Everyone can choose for themselves but if someone asks for my opinion then sure I will give it and at the moment i have nothing negative to say. I have only seen positive things happen with my health since not having meat. It takes your body along time to digest meat and thats why they say you should only have small quantities, about the size of the palm of your hand not huge slabs |

I have read this thread with many giggles. If only you city folk who pretend to know all about farming practices and so called organics really knew............
I have my own vege patch for one reason ..... its cheaper than buying the crap you get at the supermarket ......... they taste better. I love my home grown BBQ's :P I bottle raise most of our meat & yes they all have names & they all taste so much better than the stressed meat you get at the butcher. We have a local who uses only 'Organic' principals and at the best his stock are maltreated through lack of education on how and what a beast or sheep need to be healthy. He uses apple cider to worm his sheep ......... there is NO way known to man that the worms are being treated .... at best it could sell as pre marinated meat that is worm ridden!!!!!! So dont ever be fooled, just because it has an organic tag on it, does NOT mean that the animal has had less stress or had a happy bed of roses life style. Most of them are more inhumainly treated than us so called normal farmers who dont have that greenie tag!!!!!!! |

I eat peas and corn, and a few pieces of carrot with my meal every second night or so, to keep the old plumbing from blocking up....otherwise I detest anything other than spuds, mushrooms, or onions.
I dislike the way people follow fads, and all that rubbish, as far as diet is concerned. There are instances where people cannot eat certain foods, especially when the reason is medical, but I love my meat, I love BBQ sausages and kebabs. The last person who tried to get me to eat soy substitutes was left wishing they hadn't. As for all the figures sprouted about meat and milk production...PFT! Nothing more than propaganda. Meat is bad for me? I'm a smoker.....I work in the city.....and I love the smell of tyre smoke.

I've been to organic farms before, and whilst not everyone was great, the majority looked after their product real well whether it be veg or meat. To follow on from what mother nature said, i shouldn't have just kept it to organic (my mistake), it's also local produce etc that i find has more quality, not just organic (though when It's good organic produce it's better again IMO). As for being city folk, pft, i'd hardly say I live in the city lol. BLUEYBA - i know what you mean by everyone jumping (i'm not even vego!), happens a lot to my mates. And yes, I always laugh when seeing people get junk food and a diet coke, coke aint good for you, but diet coke is another thing altogether :togo:

ive been a vego for a few years now, never felt better.
*not lethargic anymore *no more indigestion *overall health best its ever been our bodies are simply not designed to eat flesh, look at our stomach acid structure compared to say for example dogs, we are worlds apart when it come down to breaking down flesh (id explain the chemical depth further but won't... i cant be stuffed). and to dispel any myths that one can't get big in the gym without eating meat, im living proof. im in way better shape than my carnivorous friends at my local gym. another thing, go to a trip to a slaughter yard or meat works or whatever they're called, you'd turn vego in a second after seeing the torture the poor beasts go through. it can bloody make a grown man cry. go Fords and go Vego's |

The stomach acid structure you speak of gives us much higher levels of Hydrochloric Acids than Herbivores, and something more inline with Carnivores. Also our pancreas produces enzymes that are ready made to handle meat and vegetables. Also our teeth point to us being omnivores. |

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnyyyyyyyway.
Not vego, but i do buy organic produce. I( am a chef. and i see a lot of produce. Veg so much doesnt make enoguh of a difference to justify the price. Meat..... Big difference. Get 2 chooks same size, one organic, one not and cook them side by side and tell me which one tastes better. Organic for the win ( Based solely on taste) |
