Default 2010 Focus Service

I live in South East Of Melbourne i have been ringing around for the first service and being quoted $280 the lowest just for an oil and filter change but they charge $99 to change the oil and filter if i just want that done i can not justify $190 extra for what? Does any of the sponsors here give a cheaper price.
Thx in advance

sorry to jump in and not answer your question but on topic.

I have sold my focus to my dad and got a falcon, I just got a call from the old dealer saying the focus is due for its 60,000km service (B) i said i would pass on the info and asked what the price would be.

I was quoted by Wayne Phillis Ford Adelaide $577

what the .... comes to mind!

60,000km service has a spark plug change. Iridium spark plugs are used, which retail about $100 for the 4. Add oil + oill filter + air filter filter change, that brings parts + fluids up to about $200-$250 total. Add in labour + general inspection (~ 2 hours @ $100+/ hour), that brings it up to $400-450. The rest is profit margin (they're running a business, afterall)

I must go work for a dealer if they pay the mechanics $100 per hour.

I doubt all money that goes to the mechanics.

When I had my alternator installed, I was quoted 3 hours labour and the total labour cost came to ~$330 if I recall correctly

my buddy in US found those spark plugs for fair cheap.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BOSCH...cessories#shId

Appears to be the same part even with the crazy shipping price but still only comes to $52.71

damn we get ripped out here!

I was an apprentice mechanic at a Honda dealership, we charged at $110 an hour for labour, plus insane markups on spare parts.

The highest paid mechanic on the floor? $20 an hour.

As much as it hurts, the extra you are paying is the piece of mind knowing Ford would (should) come to the party come warranty repairs time.

Skimp on the correct 'logbook services' and you will lose your warranty.

I have looked into using this site:

http://www.fixedpricecarservice.com.au/logbook/

Fool around with it and you may find a much better deal.

We all have to go through it when driving a new car, think of it as a good foundation for the many years you may keep your car after warranty expires.

Cheers,

Jason

Got my 60k service tomorrow, but as I purchased through Subaru, they do the absolute basic service, check fluids, and change oil & filter (got the 57i kit, so no need for air).
They charge $120 for spark plugs, but just got these on ebay for $45 from the UK http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI....=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Bargain.

You can save on labour and do the plugs yourself if you feel confident:

It's not hard on the Focus, shouldn't take you too long.

I used anti-sieze on the spark plug threads. I didn't use any dielectric grease on the spark plug boot, but might next time just to be thorough.

To be fair, that price is also paying for reception, service manager, tools and equipment, leasing of workshop building, computer systems, superannuation, workcover insurance etc etc.

That's not to say workshops aren't money pits, but there is more to the cost that the mechanics wages

So, the LV is due for its first annual service. In the spirit of keeping costs down, can anyone suggest stuff I should pick up myself to avoid mechanic mark-up? The air filter I've got covered (K&N drop in replacement). Plugs and oil? Suggestions on specific brands? Anything else?

EDIT: It's a 2.0L automatic, btw.

If you have time, you can buy a full service kit (genuine) for GBP57 from here:
http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford...e_kit_2214.htm

Focus 2008 1.8/2.0 Petrol Service Kit

Fits Focus with the 1.8 & 2.0 Petrol Engine

Fits Focus MK3 Models Built From 03/12/2007>

Kit Includes:
.Oil Filter
.Air Filter
.Pollen Filter
.Spark Plugs
.Sump Plug & Washer

The spark plugs are around AUD$100 from a Ford dealer on their own!

Sounds good. I'll even have a nice clean air filter to stick in if I have to go to Ford for any reason...

The air filter in that kit will not fit either the LS, LT or LT upgrade. I havent checked an LV myself but have they changed from the flat panel filter to what looks like a sort of pod filter?

Just checked the Ryco web site. That cyclendrical filter fits the LV only ryco part number a1630, LS and LT use the flat filter part number a1554.

lol I wonder why ford made that change?

Here is the link for "Mk2 Focus" which looks like our LS and LT
http://www.fordpartsuk.com/shop/ford...e_kit_1131.htm
It says please supply your VIN so we can supply you the correct parts (so it must have been that timeframe they changed from flat to cylindrical filters).

Thats good to know, I wonder why ford went to the trouble of changing the filter type? Unless of course it saves them money. : )

Of course.

But would you call $12,000 for a new front drivers seat for a 1999 Honda DC2 Integta Type R, a fair price?

According to the service schedule, the 2L petrol needs 5L of 5w30 oil.

Is this a good quality oil? How about the price?

Castrol Edge is fine, and Mobil 1 apparently slighly better if you want to spend the extra dollars. Both are good fully synthetic oils.

Noted down.

So, my list should read...

1 Air filter - NA, as K&N inserted.
5L Mobil 1 5w30 oil (or Castrol Edge/Magnetec if going a little cheaper...)
1 oil filter - brand???
4 spark plugs - brand???

Any other suggestions appreciated.

For spark plugs, use 4 x NGK Iridium ITR6F13. Cheap from eBay UK.

For oil filters, I just use the original Ford part - Motorcraft AFL4.
