Jobs in Melbourne, I need work!!

Hi guys,
So ive just lost my job as an apprentice plasterer as i was treated unfairly so ive just left there. now im left with no job :(
its only been 1 week and im going insane with no work or income.
Anyone got anything going at their workplace?
Im really after anything!!!!

Drop into your local butcher. They'll have work, might only be cleaning but you're after anything.

Most of the butchers I know are screaming out for reliable people.

Theres plenty of jobs out there with no experience required.. You just have to apply and see where it takes you....

Go and drop of a resume at Jayco Caravans in Dandenong. They are always looking for people, its a relativly fast working enviroment and staff turnover is huge, but its work while you find something else or decide on what your doing.

Im currently there while looking for work back in my trade, (Maintence Fitter).

Get down to your local plaster supplies and put down you name there. Pick up where you left off, thats if you still want to plaster. Its a trade, something you can always fall back on. My Plasterers are heading West to the mines for a couple of short stints and are picking up $80 per hour, flights,meals and accomodation all taken care of.
Keep trying till you fall in with the right crew.

fakegt, i wouldnt mind to keep plastering, but i just struggled abit on the apprentice wage, and my previous employer wouldnt pay overtime, paid me as little as possible and expected me to drive from job to job with my own car and petrol!
I guess ill try calling some local plasterers to see if they have anything going, id rather just a labour job just for the $$$$ though

I dont suppose this will help you seeing im in geelong but im looking for am apprentice plasterer, but i thought I would post it up anyway .
At the very least if youre really desperate i could do with a hand for the next couple days if not longer .
If your any good i may chuck some fuel money your way .

alright so ive just scored a job at the abbattoirs packing meat for now.
starting tommorow, but am still interested to hear from you guys? this is just to fill in time till i know what i want or get something more interesting or even continue my apprenticeship with a different employer!

drop into your local bottle shop. i had $3 in my bank after being unemployed for 6 months and have been there for a year now. ive learnt alot, and met alot of people doing bar work, drive thru etc etc. its payed my bills and kept me sane. ive just resigned this week as ive found a proper career move now

no one know of anything going?? please!!! ive got a job atm packing meat at the abattoirs but im only getting 2 days work a week it looks like :( please guys im going absolutely insane, im applying for everything but no responses. maybe my resume is no good?

where do you live? A few chippys I know might be in need of a labourer as one of my friends just left. They work around Melbourne (toorak, south yarra etc) and often go east and south east.

Sitting on AFF begging isn't going to do you any good.

Look on Seek and CareerOne multiple times a day for plastering apprenticeships. Ring up labour hire companies in Melbourne that need casual warehouse workers. Hell, even Mcdonalds or KFC etc if you just want work.

Ring up apprenticeship centres too.

Go to some shopping centres and ask the trolley boys who they work for (ie will be a contractor).

Lousy work. Lousy money for the effort that you put in. No matter how fit you are now, it will make you feel useless for the first week or two.

But, you get fit and spend heaps of time outside. Keep a spare pair of dry socks in your car so you can at least have dry socks on if it rains for half a day and clears up for the rest.

Oh, and put up wanted adverts on Gumtree and any other free advertising places as well.

I delivered food at night for six months, while still working temp during the day. Took it out of me but the cash came in.

As I said above, I'd go to my local butcher, they are screaming out for reliable people. Could even end up with an apprenticeship out of it.

There are two MASTERS stores opening on Ballarat RD, one in Sunshine the other in Caroline springs, absolutely HUGE with signs outside saying 'Now hiring'.

For those who don't know, Masters are the Woolworths equivalent to Bunnings except they sell even more stuff, like whitegoods etc.

If you're in the east I still think its worth travelling if you get a job at any of those two stores, career prospects would be pretty good i would imagine.

Nigel - just apply for all the driver and car cleaner positions. Plenty of jobs going around Dandenong and Hallam. Even packing type work.

Here in WA there are heaps of jobs in the mining industry. In my taxi I regularly deal with all sorts of people in the mining industry, from company directors to teenage apprentices, including the HR (human resource) people that do the hiring.

Basically, most HR and recruitment places are full of crap. A lot of the HR people that I talk to are females in their 20s and 30s who have no idea of what a mine site requires. They are the ones that won't even take your resume unless you have 12 months experience on a mine site.

Then I talk to the guys that work on the sites. Depending on the job, they don't give a damn whether you've got experience or not. They're just trying to get people that a) turn up (and pass an alcohol test) and b) are safety conscious.

You can teach skills and experience, but you can't teach reliability and common sense. It's those two that the people on mine sites are busting for, and they get pretty ****ed off with some of the bimbos that keep sending them idiots that got the job because they did a good job of faking their resume.

This little lecture relates to mining in WA, but is relevant to a lot of jobs.

Sell yourself as being reliable and having common sense. Get that across and a lot of employers won't give a damn about prior experience because they will figure out that you've got enough of a brain to learn.

Needless to say, if you do want to set yourself up financially, then move to WA (either Perth or up north) and get into mining. You'll be on $100,00 upwards fairly quickly. However, you will earn it... they're not giving away wheelbarrows full of cash for nothing.

And if you do... learn the golden lesson straight away... do NOT p1ss it all away! Most FIFO (fly in-fly out) people do and have nothing to show for the compromises that they've made to earn that income. Get a job, be disciplined with your money and invest it or buy a house somewhere. I come across a lot of people that are paying a house off in the eastern states, New Zealand or the UK (mainly Ireland).

Don't spend $500 a night on booze on your week off. Don't drop a grand at the casino. Don't get a hooker for $250 for an hour and then keep her for the whole night instead. Don't go out with $600 cash in your pocket and end up paying the taxi fare home on EFTPOS. Don't get some bimbo knocked up because she wants to get a free ride out of child-support. Don't be a charity.

Irregardless of whether it is for FIFO work or any job in particular, these my friend, are lessons in life that every horny, stupid 18 year old should be taught. Kudos.......

True story - back when my old man was working (retired 2007 after 44 years for the Board of Works-->Melbourne Parks & Waterways-->Parks Victoria) he dealt with somebody considerably younger than himself looking for a position elsewhere.

He found a job that suited his needs, but found that he didn't meet some of the criteria, namely experience.

My old man told him that it is worth applying and even if he only gets as far as an interview, then there is still something to gain in terms of gaining an insight into preparation for interviews and refining your resume.

But as it turns out, he got the job although he did not meet some of the criteria - he prepared and presented well.

I suggest that you go for anything that sounds reasonable and isn't too far-fetched at gaining and you may be surprised...
