Default is mediocrity ok now?

guys i just happen to have picked up a copy of JUST CARS, in a waiting room. its from last year but i am interested in asking the question.....

first of all a few examples

78 mustang (ugly as sin itself) - 12,500
77 Datsun coupe 1200 - (have to push this up hills) - 5,500
58 Ford zodiac - (uncle arthur had one like this) - 20,000
48 Ford Super Deluxe (just an invisible 40s sedan) - 47,000
85 VK commodore (NOT the Group A....bog standard 6) - 9,500
77 cortina (RAA/Racv delight) - 8,000

is there a genuine market for cars, at prices like this, that were at best....average in their day?

Go have a look at the prices some people are asking for stock/rusty 6 cyl falcons from the 70s.

Some people speculate or price what their mate's father's brother thinks. There are plenty of Falcons out there with Phase 4 door handles too.

Just ignore the ads and they will come to their senses.

BTW, the little Datto wasn't too bad back in the day with a tickle up.

I remember when old cars were cheap, now everyone thinks they have a classic and can ask silly money. Most of the cars you listed can be found in any paddock rusting and the farmer would be only to happy to give them to you.

sorry I dont see your point even VK's are getting on and a good one demands $$ if you want a cheap dunny door grab a VN VP

78 mustang (ugly as sin itself) - 12,500
77 Datsun coupe 1200 - (have to push this up hills) - 5,500
58 Ford zodiac - (uncle arthur had one like this) - 20,000
48 Ford Super Deluxe (just an invisible 40s sedan) - 47,000

but depending on what the condition is the above doesnt seem over the top

remember mate not every one likes Holden VE's, Yamaha VX110's & Suzuki Boulevard's infact you talk about invisible cars theres none more invisible than a VE no matter how hectic the wheels and body kit are, and I have no idea what the other 2 are but I'm suspecting bikes and there bikes Ive never heard of so its a yawn from me.

Now I'm sure to you these are great cars and bikes but to me there just transport, I'm suspecing for a classic 30's car your thinking 32 coupe or roadster, to me I would rather have a 48 SD the ford zodiac isnt for me but there starting to comand $$ to the right people for the right car, I'll agree 78 Mustang isnt the best looking of the mustangs, but $12,500 doesnt sound over the top and Datto coupes well that looks like its at the lower end price wise

like the VK back in its day, the VE is a 'dime a dozen' car for sure. i wont be trying to sell a VE in 25 years for $10,000 though......maybe a HSV version will be worth a few bucks, for sure, but the VE, in 25 years time will prob be a $1,500-2,000 car if the electrics will allow it to start. that is the reality.

the VK has a name and the VE might in 25 years time, no one will care about the VX, VY or VZ but the VE saw a change in shape, just like the the VK has the extra window last of the redmotor and a few otehr things the commodor nuts are after VH's have an odd following but no one carsd about the VB or VC and we all know about VL's and the people that chase them

too true! Like any asset in any market there are people who think that theirs is worth well over top dollar. At the moment there is always a joker out there factoring in 2007 prices + percentage of rise in the last few years, even if the market has been losing gorund. People are doing it in the sh**box market, the muscle car maket, the housing market... everywhere.

The fact is - people want old cars - for whatever reason.

Whether it was their dream car when they were 18.
Whether their grandfather/father had a car the same.
Whether they just like the old style over the new.
Whatever the reason.

People want them. And for the things you want - you pay.

I will say that ASKING price and SELLING price are 2 different things, but it is the ASKING price that usually gets people interested.

When 2007 came along the whole market spiked, and people were paying excessive amounts for nearly EVERY old car. There are lots that are still living in 2007 thinking that their XY Falcon 250ci Column Auto is worth the same as a Vermillion Fire 4-speed XY GT. But you don't have to buy their car either.

The market dictates the price of cars (and any other product) and if the seller really wants to sell the car, then the price will reduce. If they're happy to wait and find the right buyer who WANTS the car at any price (including their asking price) then you can do that too.

Back to the OP - there are plenty of cars out there that are mediocre in condition, that people seem to be selling as 'fully restored' or 'immaculate' condition - which the term Mediocre is far more fitting.

But again - you don't HAVE to buy the car you look at - it's your decision.

The car is only worth what someone (the market) is willing to pay for it, you can advertise your 1989 EA Falcon for $750,000, doesn't mean people will buy it.

Proplem there is...

A)Finding one

B)Its rusting in a paddock

No propblem in someone asking a price for a car.

A VK is just like a XY, the value of even a bog stock 6 rises and falls with the price of the other desireable models.

To the OP, a car is only worth what the buyers are willing to pay for it and conversely,
if you're not prepared to pay the price, then you're not the buyer or not in that market.

These are asking prices ... can be a big difference between asking and what they actually sell for.

Now i know why i dont like horns. Theres usually a difference between a 6k vk commy and a rusting hulk in a paddock. but like people say its a free country and people can ask what they want and people will pay what they think its worth and when those two meet you have a sale.

That magazine and its advertisers work on the principle

"theres one born everyday" and not really genuine sellers.

But they are no different to many of us, the bf cobra owners, el gt owners, and t series owners trying to catch someone. Those cars seem overpriced

I've noticed 4wds seem to have gone up a lot lately too. I picked up a 93 Pajero with mods a couple of years ago for 3k and now you cant find anything decent under 5k. People are asking 6k+ for standard Sierras when only last year they were 3k.

Loftie summed it up nicely,,,,,,while there are some silly prices on there.

Some of it is definitely generational....everything old is new again and some are playing on it. Would I pay good dollars for a neat version of a vehicle i drove when i was young for the nostaligia value? Hell yeah, it's called disposable income and wanting to be young again ;)

Doesn't work, but for that brief second it might work!

Hmm some people just dont get classics, thats ok, I think some people are mad for spending >$500 for some rego plates

Drive a sorted classic car and you will understand.

As for prices, well the "its only worth what someone is willing to buy it for" is very true, makes me puke but its true.

As time goes on most of these cars will not be decreasing in value unless something very major happens. Sure top end cars and flavour of the month cars can vary (price up a GT compared to 12 months or so ago).

Now is a great time to buy if you want to do something over the next couple of years.

+1 to not being to fussed about advertising price aswell, there have been two T3 TL50s put for same at $100k..obviously there is no actual want to sell so cars are advertised for different reasons, not all of them genuine.

I drove most of those classic Fords and Holdens when they could be had for around $8,000,
had my fun enjoyed them but I wouldn't contemplate owning any of them these days
The oldest I'd go these days is four years, maybe a nice FG XR6T or XR8 with a blower..

Ok reason being?

I dont think anyone is contemplating using them as a daily, but they could with a bit of maintenance.

Id sooner drop $20k into my Alfa than buy a fiesta or golf et al...atleast I have some kind of chance on getting a return.

Sure you dont have some creature comforts, but we are spoilt these days anyway. If I end up doing a small trip to work etc <50ks then older cars are fine.
