Default 3G Mobile Network Closure - This May Impact You and/or Your Family!

Did you know that Telstra is due to shut down its 3g network at the end of June and Optus at the end of September?

Think you're ok as your phone is 4g?

YOU MAY BE AT RISK

Some older 4g phones (it seems mostly like those made prior to 2019) do not have the capability to use Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) which will be required to allow calls to 000 in the case of an emergency once the 3g network is closed.

If you are on the Telstra network, you can check your post-3g functionality by texting the number 3 to 3498. When you do this, you will be advised on what you need to do.

More information available here, here and here.

Anyone that has elderly relos/friends also need to be aware that many of those emergency pendant things (Care alert etc) are going to be useless once 3G goes

Thanks for the tip. I sent the text even though I'm sure was ok and it was really quick reply.

My mum has newer phones than me. I still have my old Samsung S7

What irks me is that neither Hellstra or Optar$e are able to say unequivocally that all calls will be via VoLTE not just for the emergency 000 system.

This affects us, so we are shopping for new phones. Not all existing 4g LTE handsets are volte provisioned.

Very annoying.

Both are asking for trouble by pushing 000 onto VoLTE, it needs to be accessible on every band and every possible transmission type.

We are in the elevator monitoring business. There are many customers out there with elevators on the 3g network that need to migrate. The problem is bigger than you would expect

Im guessing that will also be the same with auto dialers for fire systems in some buildings. Bonus will be for buildings with gsm meters for remote power billing.

The thing is, it isn't. The previous technology changes whilst middling, didn't involve such a huge change in how voice is carried. If both carriers are moving all voice to VoLTE, it's asking for trouble as there's no redundancy if the data network shits itself.

The shutdown of the 3g network has started today, and is due to be completed across Australia by next Monday, the 4th November.

If you are on the Telstra network, you can check your post-3g functionality by texting the number 3 to 3498. When you do this, you will be advised on what you need to do.

Just checked, and the 3498 text number also works for the Optus network.

Or you can use this:

Enter your mobile phone’s 15 digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number in the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) checker.

Why not buy an older iPhone (like a 5S) and just use it as a 4G hotspot? You can turn off all the permissions and have some relative privacy.

I dont work in telco, so no idea how true this is, but apparently Telstra's 4G VoLTE is somewhat proprietary (ie. only locally sourced handsets will work), and given most of the remote area phone network is Telstra, if you're an overseas tourist and need to reach emergency services, you may be SOOL....

I have seen posts on Whirlpool over the years, with issues of overseas models not working as expected.
A friend is with Vodafone and he had an older Australian model Samsung that was 4G but not 4G VoLTE, he had to get a replacement handset when Vodafone closed their 3G network.

It appears as though it is not a Telstra issue, more an Australian carrier issue:

In Australia Band 28 is the most important of all 4G bands. It is amazing how few grey-market smartphones and modems/routers have it.

Band 28 was for analogue TV transmission in Australia, New Zealand, and some Asia-Pacific areas. It is it now the main Australian 4G band.

But the situation is getting worse as we move to 5G. First, Band 28 is not in the major markets of the US, China, India, Russia, much of Europe and Asia.

So my 2013 LG Smart TV won't play Netflix anymore.
Says,Netflix is no longer available on this device.
My modem is 5g.
Is my TV too old now?
I've gone to settings etc, no luck.
Can't access internet either yesterday YouTube works, and if I plug in my Chrome cast Netfix works.

I am guessing the latest Netflix App no longer supports the TV operating system.
There are consumers looking for dumb TVs and using addon devices such as Apple TV, Chromecast, Amazon Firestick etc.
A dumb TV is more responsive you don't have all the overheads of the operating system etc and also it is cheaper if you want new tech to upgrade the addon device.
There are very few Dumb TVs for sale as the manufacturers are payed by Google etc to include the Software.
