I do like the 24hr freeze.

No point having just an app where they can still pump up the price without notice.

The freeze will stuff up the Stations near Costco.
My Car runs on LPG sonI don't use Costco.
I have been told that nearby Stations drop their prices during the day and then when the Costco closes at night the Prices are jacked up.

What a load of unenforceable rubbish!

So - rather than tango with NSW and Tasmania to introduce a simple cross-state platform, they’ve chosen the “Victorian Way” which is more legislation and… Wait for it… More penalties!

As our FC would say “Absolute clown show”.

Good....will hopefully encourage gougers to keep it lower for longer.

This already exists.
Get the 7 eleven app.
Lock in price . . . I think for 5 days.
The trick is WHERE you lock-in the price.
I travel to Coburg to visit the daughter and locking tin here but buy in South east suburbs of Melbourne.
Saved $6 last 50litres
Not huge but nice.
I also use petrol spy to see if this is worth it.

So ... Victorian Government spends money developing an "app" to help consumers find lowest fuel prices.

Wouldn't an easier way to give Victorian motorists lower fuel prices would be to stop pandering to Greens, Teals, your ABC, and the left wing of the ALP, by allowing oil drilling into the proven oil reserves in the Gippsland Basin and the Otway Basin?

Perhaps go further and keep some oil "reserved" for Victorians at below market rates. (Qld has done the same thing in the past with the Roma oil fields and WA does the same with their gas supply.)

Bass Strain oil and gas had made a motza for the Victorian Government and the people of Victoria. It has powered industry. Provided lots of employment. Help build hospitals, roads, schools, etc.

Writing an "app" doesn't really help ...

Also, assuming this comes to fruition - presumably the “price lock” will require a degree of user disclosure (eg an account of some sort). More data to sell or leak, another government project to outsource to their mates.

Most people could save more money by careful budgeting and shopping, than an app like this is likely to return.

Personally I think a bigger vote-winner could be irreversible sterilisation of convicted violent offenders aged 13+ with the penalty upon custodial parents if under that age.

Yeh, great scheme, until they put a 25c discount cap on it :P

There is a Sleven in Donvale that is always dirt cheap. Unfortunately its just out of range from where I used to live to lock it in frequently. I think my record was like 45c off, but that was before they put the 25c cap on it.

It adds up when you fill up 2 to 3 times a week.

NSW has had 'FuelCheck' App for yonks.

I don't know if the prices are locked in...but they are 'real time'. The App is a great idea because there have been occasions where there has been a significant difference in prices between petrol outlets in my local area. Sometimes this can be as much as 50 cents/litre ...and that is a huge saving over a whole tank.

I won't drive out of the way to save a couple of dollars...but $25 ?

My God man, don't you dare use such foul thoughts and common sense thinking....

Don't know where I read it but the line was something like, I'm doing my bit for the environment and using up as much oil and gas as I can now so its all used up faster......

You mean a government actually doing something that involves real government work, not issuing an order that some underling can do?

I don't really know anyone who regularly shops around for fuel. We generally use APCO/United as around Geelong they seem to be cheaper than Caltex/BP/Shell but I can't say I've ever specifically gone to one because I've looked it up and it's cheaper. Nor do I wait for the cheap day of the price cycle.

Despite all the fuss and furore, fuel isn't anywhere near my biggest bill.

I price check, always. Fuel bill is about $180/wk for me presently. There’s around 20¢/litre variation locally, buying 90-100 litres a week it’s enough to demand attention.

I never used to check but the price of BP98 can vary up to 45c/L between a Tuesday and Wed, saying that I always go to the same servo to fill all my cars, that way if I get a bad batch of fuel there's half a chance of getting them to come to the party

NSW fuel app is great. I pulled up at a servo and saw the price was 2.20. Checked the app. Less than 200m up a side street was fuel for 1.70. Quite the saving when putting 80L in

Been happening in Sydney for years. You literally see the price going up at 7:30 pm when the Costco pumps turn off

I'm lucky to be near a Coscto and Liberty so have a slightly lower "ripped off by oil company feeling"
...All this fuel talk jogged my memory, excuse the slightly o/t post.......

The first time I drove my brand new T5 Transporter out on a country run of 500km, when the range got down to 20km I instinctively reached down to switch it over to petrol from lpg as per habit from 10 years of driving the VW Transporter ....and then I realised I was in the new T5 and not the old T4 dual fuel...and who the hell has a distance to empty reading that runs in units of 10km? Must say I never forgot to make sure I knew where fuel was after that day of crawling along with 10km and then 0km range left and not knowing when the next servo would appear....still remember that knot in my stomach or was it twisted bum muscle...

for some perspective, even at 25c per litre cheaper, it would probably only save me one cup of coffee per week.

For some perspective...that's an expensive cup of Coffee

Here it’s a solid 15% of the grocery bill, the saving from checking for lowest local price. I can’t afford to throw away money.

You must be on some good coin for this comment, how many coffees in a week do you purchase?

I agree with CB, I cannot afford to give money away that easy.

say 300km per week at 7l/100. Ok, so that's a tenner but my coffee costs $7.

I chose 25c as an extreme. round here the biggest difference I've seen between servos is maybe 10c?

point is, for me, no it's not worth really getting too stressed about saving a few cents. Don't get me wrong, I think all fuel is way too expensive, but the difference in servos just isn't worth worrying about
