Default FGX XR8 Value Holding

Thinking of purchasing a manual XR8 in the coming months, mainly as a weekender, and mainly to hold onto and look after a piece of Australian motoring history.

What are people’s thoughts on what the value of these cars will do in the coming years?

My budget is under $60,000 and around 50,000kms. As stock as possible

Tbh I think your best bet is to get it for your own enjoyment as a first priority and if the value increases all the better for you.

There are a few FGX's in hibernation I'd suggest as well as a fair few FG's also so that will influence the final value

I met a guy awhile back who has a purple GTP in his garage since new with the 5.4 and has driven it fotlr 1,500 ks cause he wants to get the best possible $ later..
Tbh I don't see he will get the return he thinks but I could be wrong

Take a look at the equivalent vehicles from 20-30 years prior for an indication. I would say they might hold their value rather than appreciate by any great amount.

I’ve always thought if you buy something the first priority should be to just enjoy it. Look after it and keep it in the best condition you can. If it holds value then that is a win. If it increases in value then that is a huge bonus. I think these type of cars will hold value, possibly lose a small percentage but unlikely increase by any great amount. If you can buy something, enjoy it for a number of years and then sell it for more or less the same price that’s a huge win IMO.

Any opinions on future desirability between FGX XR8 v FG2 GTP? Both are priced pretty similar.
I’m leaning towards the FPV.
Tougher looking and the FGX will always be associated with Fords half arsed last attempt that could be mistaken for a Mondeo.

For that budget your nearly in Sprint territory.

Sprints are a better proposition simply because they have a build number.

If the price is the same, a GT-P is way better proposition. You get 6-piston/4-piston Brembo's instead of 4-piston Brembo front and single piston sliders rear, you get the premium seats, and all the FPV stuff.

To counter that, the FGX XR8 has the firmer R-Spec suspension (which you may or may not like), but you also get the wider rear wheel and tyre. From memory, the you also get an updated powertrain software for the Boss 335 engine.

See, unless the guy is young enough to wait several decades, he has wasted his money. Yes, it will be worth big money one day, but when? And will he be able to live that long to see the return and then enjoy it?

I'm in the middle. I bought the car because I wanted the last model (yes, I know there is a Sprint that came after), but its what I wanted, when I wanted. I drive it when I want, how I want, never driven in the rain. It's now 10-years old and has only 7500 km on the clock. At one point it was worth $20k more than what I paid for it, which was nice but never the goal.

Addressing the OP's question, if you are aiming for a return at some point, then I'd be looking clean, original, low km FPV's or the Sprint. If the standard XR8 appeals more to you, I'd track down one in a rarer colour. Something like Aero Blue, Vanish or Emperor.......................

Definitely intend to drive it and not hide it.

Sprints seem a little too far out of my budget unfortunately.

Except this one, not sure why it’s so much cheaper.

Historically its usually just been the GT/GS nameplate pair with some one off specials along the way still pulling the numbers long term.. ...

My long term bet would be on a unmodified manual GT-F grocery getter...

To the OP, if you have time and patience i bet you could snag a sprint in the low 60's soon - it just has a little bit more exclusivity than the regular XR8 and will likely hold some value long term as the very last of the Falcon v8's

A good friend of mine personally saw this car when it was for sale privately by the 2nd owner, I saw the photos he took. It is absolutely trashed

The photos hide it well.

That explains the price I guess

Hopefully prices plummet with the "investors" losing their shirts.

Anything with a Miami in it and a manual behind it will hold its value well

If they hold their prices, they're reducing in value. I'd never buy a car as an investment into the future. Property, yes. Cars, nope.

The next gen isn't as invested in cars like Boomers to Gen X, which was probably prime prices. Moving to Millennials, that is changing and the generation after that will have zero history with the Falcon so their values will be average at best IMO, just the last of the millennials buying these cars in the future. Gen Z and Alpha (or whatever they are), will not care for Falcon; they grew up with Mustang as the hero car in Australia.
