The Ghia's got the XR6 engine. For the EF at least it was 162Kw compared to 154KW from memory.

Basically an Xr6 engine and ecu calibration but with a quieter exhaust so hence 2kw less than the xr6 itself.

It's worth adding this only applies to the series II.

Since the Ghia 6s got the XR6 engine, I don't see why the Ghia 8s shouldn't have got the XR8 engine :( Although I do like my 3.45 LSD :hihi:

Has anyone here driven a standard 157kw EF etc or EF1 Ghia, back to back with a Series 2 XR6 engined Ghia? I'm interested to know how they compare, and how the Ghia compared to an EF XR6. I thought if you got a series 2 ghia, and added an exhaust + extractors ud have the equiv of an xr6, but with leather and electrics. However a mate of mine said the ghia with xr6 engine was nothing to rave about, i could pocket the money save buying a series 1, and tinker with the engine later on..

the extra ~5kw will barely be noticable. and the ghia vs xr6 would feel fairly similar also due to the only differences being 2kw and a bit of extra weight. get a series 2 ghia, add extractors and exhaust, and you'll have the equiv of an xr6 + exhaust and extractors. the xr6 only got 2kw gain over the ghia, which was simply due to the slightly different exhaust, even the manifolds are the same.

Dont forget weight issues too. The Fairmont Ghia is about 80kg's heavier than the Fairmont, which is about 10kg's heavier than the XR6. (going on EL figures)

7kw over the 157kw cars doesn't seem much for an EF XR6, do they go alrite? |

for a rough estimate, i've seen stock EL Ghias run 16.1 @ the drags, same strip, i've seen an EF XR6 run a 15.9
considering the slight weight difference and miniscule power differences, it seems pretty right. as for that, a stock EF/EL would run around 16.5 at the same place. as said, its not *really* the 7kw that gives the better feel, its the 3.45 LSD.

Speaking for the EL, the standard six has 157kw while the ghia has 162kw, xr6 has 165kw, the only difference to my knowledge bw the ghia and the xr6 is the level of exhaust baffling. Not 100% sure of how this relates to the EF, i was under the impression the series II EF Ghia had the xr6 red motor, giving it the same 5kw boost as the EL Ghia. Both the EF & EL Fairmont have the same 157kw engine as the GLi & Futura.
My EL s1 Ghia is powerful enough to drive, despite its currently leaky muffler, and with some exhaust & intake work, will hopefully gain about 15kw at the wheels. I'm looking at putting on a redback mandrel bend 2.5inch cat back system, with a stainless angle cut dual tip at the noisey end. Hopefully the oxygen sensor is still functional enough to pick up the easier flow, in turn giving a bit better economy & added power. Work in progress.

In the EL the fairmont weighs in at 1580kg versus 1602kg for the Ghia.
Powerwise the XR6 engine in the Ghia was rated at 161Kw versus the stock 157kw. The big difference was the auto ghia got the 3.45 diff ratio which with the XR6 engine did liven things up a lot. The V8 ghias all go the 165kw engine and 3.23 diffs which were pretty ordinary. Only the EL XR8 got the quite decent 185kw engine and 3.45 diff. |

Kenaz you 've got one so you tell us how it is. Spec sheets said 3.23 for all I6 and V8 auto's and 3.45 for fairmont Ghia so I interpreted that as 3.23 for all V8's.
Oh and yes a typo its 162kw for the ghia. |

On the brochure scans it says 3.45 for Fairmont Ghia. I read that as 3.45 for both I6 and V8. Could be wrong though...

Probably not quite your after as its manual V Auto Car 1 = EF1 Futura auto, 157kw, 3.08SS? Car 2 = EF2 XR6 manual, 164kw, 3.45LSD (all factory) My XR6 feels 10x better to drive than my brothers Futura. It would kill it off the line and it accelartes a lot harder. Also feels alot more responsive. But i also hate the auto's so slowww and boring after the XR with 5speed and 3.45's :1syellow1 Also it handles a lot better than the futura but i guess that could be easily changed with a quailty spring/shock setup and i dont if its just me but the seating position is a lot better in the XR too. |
