with a timing light. as far as i know you have the timing light going and you turn on the dizzy somewhere with a spanner/socket. and you can see the little TDC line move forward. best to get a mechanic or someone with know how as you could easily crank it way over and ping it nuts off.

I'd say the best way to do it would be on a dyno? advance it, run it up and listen for pinging and the power difference?

nah you dont need a dyno really. in 99% of cases the power increase isnt that massive. just crank it up go for a drive to the redline a couple times and listen. mins on about 18 degrees of advance at the moment. ive heard people running up to 20. any more and most cars ping.

make sure you short the self test pins together to get it into the mode to set timing. it's the 2 left pins on the connector under the steering wheel. my method is adjust the timing on the worst fuel that you use... i always use 98 octane so i can run advanced timing.. if you sometimes use standard fuel I would set the timing to work with that.. otherwise when you do use standard fuel it might ping. Basically advance it littles bits and take it for a drive... once it pings you've advanced it too far so put the timing back just a little bit and that should be good. Advanced timing seems to make a BIG difference on these engines so everyone should do it.
