Exclamation 'Unnecessary' posts; please read

G'day all,

In recent times it has been brought to my attention that a minority of members have been a bit out of control as far as unnecessary posting is concerned. This includes having chit-chat conversation via the forums rather than PM, multiple posts in a row, and unhelpful or time-wasting replies to technical questions, such as "Nope, sorry, i can't help".

Please be aware that compared to many other forums, we do prefer quality over quantity of posts and when a minority do not respect this, it causes aggravation. Higher post count does not equal a better reputation on the forums when a member becomes infamous for useless posts.

Now that the matter has been brought to everyone's attention, we will be sending out warnings to any such bandwidth-wasting members who continue this practise.

This is a difficult rule to enforce as the forums are not expected to be 100% serious, but to take no action would risk a lowering of our overall standards.

I invite any constructive discussion here.

Cheers!

Nope, I can't help you becaue I don't post whore.

But on a serious note I hope Cruzin EB see's this. Dont take it the wrong way but quality does count! It gets annoying to open these pages and see replies then to only find it was a waste of time. I probably did the same when I first started using the forums a couple of years ago. I used to post ONLY a smily for a while there. So yeah a bit more thought into what you post would be good

Why not just remove the post count all together? I've always wondered why it's necessary to have a post count. Why do we have it? Maybe instead of a post count, have the members join date (to show how long they've been a member) Personally post count means nothing to me.

I'm guilty myself of what's dubbed as 'chit chat' in a thread but to be honest I don't see it as that because to me it's just replying to questions/comments. Yet I've seen plenty others do exactly the same and it's let go. Something needs to be put in place so that it's the same rule for ALL. Maybe a dedicated section for chit chatting. Not everyone has mIRC or uses MSN.

Anyway, they are just my thoughts and suggestions.

i don't think its a matter of posting 'crap'
its simply that there is no need to say 'i don't know' in a thread.
if you can't help or can't offer any thing constructive to a thread, then there is no need to post.

if you're bored and want to chat to some other ford ppl, join the #eseries or #aff chat room.

it's an IRC chatroom. There's a sticky about it in this section: http://www.fordforums.com.au/showthread.php?t=450

I suggest messing with post whores' minds, by modifying their account so they're reducing their post count if they post in a particular section where they seem to whore.

And leave that "-1 post" counter on until the whore learns their lesson!

Or maybe a Barbie avatar with "POST WHORE" in it

Hehehe... That's a damn good incentive for people not to post whore. I have been guilty of useless threads before (haven't we all) but the last thing anyone wants is the barbie avatar!

I found out the hard way...

I agree - why do we have post counts? Pointless really, considering I don't even look at mine.

Barbie, imho, would have to be in a compromising, legspread possie with the POSTWHORE across the bits that need to be blanked out...

The worst post wh0res aren't in it for the post count. They are in if for one of two reasons.

(1) they have no life
(2) they like seeing their name everywhere.

Off topic threads aren't the problem, useless posts no matter where they are, as Trouty has pointed out, are. Join dates are even more irrelevant as someone can be a member for a lot of years and say absolutely nothing.

IMO, people are getting too worried about post counts rather than the real issue of useless posts.

Exactly.. the idea is to contribute in a constructive and helpful manner not just blab on.. The problem then arises that many threads become no go zones for those that can help or have an educated opinion...
The strange thing is that it is more noticable with the E-series threads, as I would hedge a bet alot of people have owned one, learnt some tips and tricks, have plenty of useful imformation to share but choose to stay out of the E series forums.. I wonder if it because of some of the bandwidth busting crap that goes on?

This seems to be on an eight month cycle. AFF (and other forums) seems to follow a trend of having a few months of good clean conversations, then there is an inundation of "usless threads and posts." (some what like this post).

I don't think post couts etc are the cause or the issue here. Plenty of forums who do not display post counts have the 'whores' still lurking and spreading themselves everywhere. It usualy just takes a thread like this to bring notice to the offenders to pull the reins in a little.

u know u didn't have to remove the name everyone proberly knows who it still is :P

post counters are just for people to brag about they do no good just get rid of them, y not have a donations thing insted so we can make the site bigger and better

(ie under nickname have like so much money donated)

least then they can brag that they are helping the website move to bigger and better things

Money is nice, but its the posts that make a forum. Has a person who chucks in some $ made a more significant contribution than another with a few thousand posts to his name?

Post count is more of an indication of how much time somebody spends contributing to the content of the forums. Obviously some contributions are better than others. There are some useless members who will not be taken seriously no matter how many posts they have.

Removing post counts would work - I actually did this on a forum I helped run at one stage, and it worked rather successfully to cull the pointless posts...

I don't tend to look at the post counts here anyway due to the fact most of the content is useful information - I tend to more often recognise names/handles of people who I remeber for this reason or that; and know whose opinions I value higher than others etc... I certainly notice the pointless posts also and often think yeah, that's so and so doing their usual thing again....

In my opinion I don't think the post count is an issue. I think it's more just people being bored and not having anything useful to say, and therefore giving us alot of useless posts/threads.

I think the best way to handle it is for moderators to delete unneccessary/inappropriate posts and warn people that are doing it alot. And if they continue doing it after being warned possibly a temporary ban from the forums will get through to them.

Thanks Minge

XA Coupe: Nah, it was actually a pic of the member of a metal group called "Platinum Brunette". That guy is doing a take-off of Twisted Sister's drag act back in the 80s.

At least they don't copy TISM's early appearances (naked except balaclavas & guitars!)

OK I'll stop here because I'm kind of doing now what this thread is asking us not to do.

Ghia5L out.
