Airbus A380 - Mitsibishi 380. Coincidence?

Personally I would not set foot on this aircraft until it's been flying for at least 5 years. I was speaking to a Qantas pilot who reckons its development and testing (especially testing) was performed "too quickly" due to political pressure.

Pretty bare lol

It's the prototype so there's a lot of ballasting/test equipment in lieu of cabin trims and seats.

Bloody ugly looking thing if you ask me. You can definitely make out how the A380 has 50% more cabin space than the B747.

Thanks for the pics Regie, a few of my mates scored a few shots of it over the harbour this morning.

Its a thing of beauty!!!!!!

I'm still a huge fan of the 747 though, the release of the A380 wil mark the end of an era for sure....

Big and ugly, Im sure it will be a huge sucess however (despite the runway space it needs). It is really a much more efficient plane than than the 747-400 and the old 747SP Qantas used to use.

Its good to see some competition with Boeing, especially with the death of MacDonnel Douglas and Lockheed's dropout.

It will probably be very safe too and follow Airbus's tradition of having safe airframes. If any incidents do occur it will probably be pilot error with pilots being unfamiliar with, Airbus's unconventional flight control systems.

Anyhow, it good to see what human ingenuity can do

yeah i was standing just off runway 34L when it landed. Very impressive. Have also seen photos from inside, just ballast tanks and heaps of telemetry stuff

Im looking forward to Boeings reply to the A380..the 747 Advanced. Also cannot wait to see the Dreamliner

Anyone got any video of it landing? I forgot to take a camera to work today :(

I was reading that Heathrow airport was having to spend a tonne of cash as well to incorporate being able to make room for the A380 as well.

The amount of money invested in getting this plane in the air was huuuge (billions).

I don't think its quite that bad, I remember hearing about Christchurch airport doing upgrades much much less minor than what you describe, cant remember specifics

Don't know if you have heard or read how big the Airbus A380 is but I will put it up anyway.

HEIGHT - 24.08m (as high as a seven storey building)
WEIGHT - 560 tonnes (max)
WING SPAN - 79.8m
LENGTH - 72.75m (three-quarters of a rugby league field)
RANGE - 15,000km
FUEL LOAD - 310,000 litres
SEATING - 555 including 437 economy passengers on upper and lower levels
COST - $320-$349 million each

So remember Sesame Street? Now that is really BIG BIRD!!!

the wings appear to have quite alot of pre camber(whatever you call it, thats in house construction) built into them - they must flex up almost straight under load

its funny, when you see it on the tv it actually doesn't look that big - it's a similar style to the smaller planes - must be the hump the 747 has that IMO makes it "look" more imposing

Cmon guys , They almost never crash ! This plane has a 100% flying record !

I have a philosophy about flying ! You are safe if you sit at the back of the plane ! Have you ever heard of a plane backing into a mountain ?????

That means the Airbus A380 is the second largest aeroplane in the world, behind only this one...

Antonov AN225 Mriya
Height: 19.5 metres
Gross Weight: 590,909kg
Wing Span: 88 metres
Length: 85 metres
Range: 4,500km (with max cargo load of 250 tonnes), 15,400km unloaded
Fuel Load: 300,000kg
Seating: 70
Cost: €200,000,000.00 (AU$320,329,703.57)

AN225 is one beast of an aeroplane.

And here is the plane the Airbus A380 kicks down the third largest in the world...

Antonov AN124 Ruslan
Height: 21.06 metres
Gross Weight: 404,545kg
Wing Span: 73 metres
Length: 69 metres
Range: 8100km (with full 150 tonne max payload), 13,300km unloaded
Fuel Load: 213,740kg
Seating: 120
Cost: €85,000,000.00 (AU$136,143,624.10)

Some really, really big planes. A380 is huge... I heard someone it was possible to fit it out to seat 800 passengers!? I don't know if this is true or not...

: Just imagine the damage it could do if terrorists got hold of it & flew it into a building, with 310,000 L of fuel on board.

Im in the airline game (as it seems some others are) - this plane is big big news. Not obviously due to its size - but it is going to destroy conventional flight paths and hubbing of a/craft that happens now.

Boeing will do something spesh too im sure.

Oh yeh are those Antonov's commercial/passenger jets? I didnt think they were. So this airbus is No.1 for passenger jets *I think*.

Im sure the oil tycoons will love this jet. the ammount of fuel it will use eheheh.

I did hear that the Airbus is here for qantas to shoot a promo vid . So when they are done with it, they will rip the qantas stickers off it.

but what we can build now days amazes me

No, the Antonovs are used as cargo freighters and military transports. The AN225 is the world's largest aeroplane outright, and the AN124 was the second largest, until the Airbus A380 was released. In passenger plane terms, the A380 is the largest.

I was of the opinion it takes a fair bit of work to get them in.

Not just in terms of Runway upgrades for it's weight/size - but I think SYD and MEL are also putting in double story aero bridges in the terminals so you can board both levels at once?
