Well it's time to get new brake pads on the car and I am going to go for either Bendix Ultimates or Greenstuff. Dont really care that much about rotor wear or brake dust, but rather outright performance in braking. The standard brakes with standard pads are pretty rubbish at the moment and fade quite easily, enticing me to use engine braking alot more. Can anyone recommend a good brake specialist in the Sydney area with reasonable prices? I'd even drive to say Canberra if the brake shop is highly recommended and their prices are good. However a specialist in Sydney would be preferable seeing I live there. When the rotors wear through I am also looking to put on DBA 4000 slotted rotors. How much should I expect to pay for either of the pads or rotors?
Thanks in advance, Dave

Save yourself the teouble and get new rotors and pads all at once.. just new pads and you will be up for 60 a pair to get rotors machined and they will die sooner than your pads. as for pads definetly go greenstuff much better performance.

Roger that, EBC better than BENDIX, which are hard on rotors and make more dust. DBA slotted 4000's are good gear. Standard fitment on NSW highway patrol cars. You could get really serious and go to cebco.com.au and spend $2000 + on a real performance upgrade.

I have Greenstuff on the front with slotted rotors. Greenstuff do not recomend this. Also Green stuff prefer a little heat before they work properly.
On the rear I have Bendix Metalkings. They don't get dusty and I'm happy with the way they work.

Do the rotors, pads and bearings all at the same time, it'll save you money and hassles in the long run.
I believe the DBA4000 rotors are around $400 a side, not 100% on that though. To compare, stock rotors are around $70 each. I use stock rotors with Bendix Advance pads all round, and the brakes are fairly good for an EF, plus the rotors don't warp as much as cars with Greenstuff or Metal King pads. E-Series brakes are too small for such a big car, you'll never get fantastic braking from a single piston and 286mm rotor. Hightek Brakes have a twin piston setup for E-Series available here - http://www.fordmods.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6992 - Keep in mind you'll be paying more for rotors and pads in the future though.

I use Bendix Ultimates with the DBA4000 rotors and definitely noticed an improvement over the standard setup. From memory i paid $210 each rotor and $100 for the pads. I personally wouldn't recommend Greenstuff pads as many people have stated that they pit the disc (hello brake shudder) - only way to remove it is by machining. I havn't used them myself, therefore i'm only going on what people have told me. The ultimates are very dusty and don't last very long (i got 12,000km out of my last set!)
If you're after outright performance with the standard setup speak to a dedicated brake place - my mate has Race Brake pads on his rex and they decelerate the thing at freightening speed. They can custom mould the brake compound onto the backing plate.. cost about $200. Only problem with this particular compound is that it squeels when cold. Also, not too sure on rotor wear at this stage as they were only fitted to the car 8-9 months ago (10,000km or so..) |
