Usually get that message when you are trying to capture copyright material

what is it you are trying to record.

yes, if there is a Macrovision protection (Macrovision only protects on the analog out signal) if two digital devices are connected together the recording device will not attempt to record the signal. if the recording device is analog, it will attempt to record but you will get a bad recording
eg if you connect a DVD player in to a Mini DV camcorder, you will not be able to record the signal (from a movie) message appears "COPY INHIBIT" if you use composite video or S-video, will give u the same

The macrovision protection is encoded in the video channel.
Depending on how you have it connected there is ways of cleaning signals which overcome certain problems.
Google is your friend.

P.S. I am not suggesting that anyone should try and copy any copyrighted material.

Thanks all for your responses.

My current connections are thus :

Toshiba HD set top box connected to Hitachi Plasma.
STB is also connected to SONY DVD Recorder. STB output to DVD recorder Input.

I can record most programs no problem. However, there are certain programs........FOOTY , some movies , docos etc, where it seems the signal is encoded and cannot be recorded.........

Is this the case with a HARD DISK DRIVE recorder.........can you record any program on a HDD recorder or will the encoded signal also prevent recording on these devices as well.

I imagine that you would still have issues recording the program from the HDD to DVD ????
