Just thought I would share my experience with my busted power window motor that went the other day. Well being like most people I took the trim off to find the power windows cable system flopping around and not doing a whole lot when pressing the window switch, now about this time I start thinking all the possible ways of fixing it, first was the easy way, get a price from Ford, they wanted $560 to fix it which include the $380 to buy the motor ===> NO WAY !!! So went to the wreckers they said they would not supply me with a second hand unit..... : .....but they would sell me an aftermarket unit for $120 or $200 fitted....now it took me two seconds to decide on getting him to install it and the beauty is, that the aftermarket unit fits EA to EL, so just a bit of "just in case" info for the rest of the E-series drivers.

Seems a bit odd they wouldnt supply you with a 2nd hand unit.
I was looking at those aftermarket window regulators a few weeks back (on ebay they are like $75 buy it now) but luckily, it turned out it was just the switch that was dodgy. (undoing 2 screws is easier than pulling door apart)

the cable floping around usually means its broken. if you go to a self serve wreckers just buy the cable that is broken. ive done thins with frayed cables and costs peanuts to fix.

I personally wouldn't go for a second hand unit, because it would probably be as old as the parts you're replacing. The plastic does get brittle over the years and particularily if the windows get used a fair bit. I have had two power windows replaced (both motor and regulator) and while it cost a hell of a lot to replace, at least now I have confidence that those 2 windows won't break any time in the near future. My right rear window was fixed about 4 or 5 times before I finally replaced it a couple of months ago. Now it's gone from the crappest window on the car to the best one. I used genuine parts, but the motor that was already on there was aftermarket, meaning that window's been replaced twice now.

I thought $200 smackers for some one else to fix it was heaps better than me stuffing my Saturday morning up to do it, especially with a bung knee. Plus I am of the same opinion as ea_silver_ghia, replacing just as old parts means they could break again at anytime and probably at the most inconvienent time, eg rainy day !
finnyman sounds like your bottom bracket that holds the window could be loose, also try spraying some window seal lubricant to make it easier for the windows to move in the felt channels. |
