Does anyone know if a CA18 or SR20 engine can be legally engineered into a MK1 Escort in Qld? I understand it would cost a fortune, but I'm curious as to whether or not it can be legally done.

Might seem obvious but, why don't you contact the Qld RTA? I know QLD has problems with interstate registered V8 Capris so maybe its a flat out NO. One phone call could save you a lot of money and grief.....either that or move to a more progressive state. :

We have a corolla sprinter with high power ca18 in queensland legaly registered. The secret is the "blue" plate. See the aforementioned rta. then look up an engineer and he will sort out a plan with you.

Eskys with SR20s have been done before. It would be fairly easy for engineering, compared to putting in a 6 or 8 into it.
Get the motor out of an early S13, compared to a S15, from what I've been told, you only have to conform to the S13 year model's ADR laws. Although a CA18 would be cheaper to source. |

Not a real big performance mod, but, what about this....
I had a Twin Cam back in the early 70s and in 93 my wife was looking a buying a Capri (new Convertable). I poped the bonnet and what did I see...an engine that looked very familiar..If a mazda 1600 DOHC is not a copy of a Lotus I don't know what is! Even better there is an 1800 version of it. The only problem I could see would be engine mounts (not to hard) and Distributor (could be an issue). Any thoughts??? |

Yeah, but they don't look like the original Twin Cam lotus motor. The 1600s do.

They weigh about two ton and the power to weight ratio is probabley the worst of any engine ever designed and manufactured.
They are hard to find because most were in Transit vans which were either torched in frustration or converted to Falcon 250 6's that used less fuel and went about 450% better. I believe you will find a stash of them at Bobbin Head in Sydney where they were exclusively used as boat anchors. |

I's just saying that the Mazda engines are quite nice performers. The twin cam Lotus lookalike would certainly be the right choice..

I seriously doubt the power to weight ratio being the same a 2Ltr. Back in the 70s I can't remember a single V4 being used in any conversion around the traps or in any publications. The 1600, Twim Cam and 2Ltr where all the rage, (and very occasionally the 250cuin for track). I remember Bob Holden building a 2ltr with a BW automatic for Ford Australia to trial around 74 I think.
Maybe retro if your a POM |

geez, i'v never seen a v4 ford in a car .seen plenty of them get rebuilt at hot rod shows .if you want people to look at something give them somthing they hav'nt seen.i think a v4 in a esky van done up write could have some WOW factor about it.then again an sr20 might give the driver a WOW factor.
