Default EA-ED pod filter setup

First off this was not my idea! Calv did this first and sent me pictures and it looked pretty good so I thought it would do it. I've always had trouble thinking of how i could do a pod setup using the eb airbox (most people seem to change to ef/el setups).

This is my 4th air intake setup and gotta say its the best so far.

My first setup was a just a pod filter connected to the end of the airbox pipe sitting in the hot engine bay. Seemed to improve throttle response but lacked power.

Second setup pod filter directly on the end of throttle body. Further improved throttle response but still lacked power (sucking in more hot air).

Third setup panel filter setup using the bigger xh snorkel and a bmc panel filter. Not as much throttle response as the pod but seemed to make power actually sucking cold air in.

Now here is the 4th setup. I've pulled out the old k&n pod filter and attached it to the end of the airbox pipe. I've then made a hole in the side of the airbox and also had to file a few ribs in the airbox so the pod filter can fit inside. From where the airbox pipe originally hooked up i've used this to run a flexible pipe down to under the car to get more cold air. the airbox lid fits ontop nicely with the xh snorkel still functional. The cold air pod filter setup seems to be the best of both setups with good throttle response and making power sucking in cold air, and also getting the deeper exhaust note and induction noise that you get when using a pod. Also it still looks like a factory setup which is good.

Of course none of this is dyno proven and just based on what i can tell from driving the car.

Heres some photos. Thanks calv for showing me this setup.

only bad thing i see bout it is the original ribbed intake pipe that usually sits on bottom of box is ribbed=which means slight restriction compared to a smooth lined pipe

One thing i should mention is be careful with clearance of the throttle body with the pipe that goes to under the car. I had it in a decent position but it slid down a bit and my throttle got stuck. The car reved up to 6000rpm between changing gears and I lost my power steering belt!! Fixed that problem with a couple of cable ties lol.

Regarding ribbed pipes.. I actually found it pretty hard to find decent pipes. Bunnings I couldnt find anything. The new pipe is actually a "performance intake" pipe from autobarn lol cost me $20 !! It's ribbed on the outside but actually quite smooth on the inside. Wouldn't mind replacing the original one if I can find something decent to use (i'm not buying another autobarn pipe)

That Cold air pipe is in the same position i had my first setup.

I ended up just making a box and getting a steel intake pipe bent up.

looks ok.

Yeah I've seen pics of your setup Kerry it looks pretty good. I'm not really motivated (or skilled) enough to make my own box though. Plus this setup took me only about 20-30mins to do.

Looks great
Was about to say the XH snorkel was not going through the air filter, but then I looked at the pic properly.

After putting that tube going down the bottom i noticed that i had lost throttle response.. If i have just the thinner tube going straight down under the airbox and just below the bumper.. it goes alot better..

I'm guessing the black tube heats up too much and the cold air goin through it goes hot..

Your setup also looks good Kerry, but is that a flat piece of material on the top (with Rush written on it), or did you bend it into position? It's kinda hard to tell in the photo, but it does look flat, although I'm not sure. Also what material did you use on the side part of the box? Does it keep the heat out well?
Thanks

cool it would be good to get some more pics.. i wouldn't mind doing something like yours eventually kerry.

where do you get carbon fibre sheets from? was it easy to cut to the right shape? did you need to drill holes to mount it all? is the bottom of it sealed or does it suck air through the holes underneath and around the headlight area?

I have made the box's aout of 6mm perspex aswell before.
I got the CF from AWC through JR.
I used a diamond wheel in my dremal to cut it.
No holes drilled.
There is a 3" hole in the inner guard and a pipe running down behind the ABS module, to the hole in the front bar.

cool sounds like it would work pretty well, i think the bad thing about my setup is that the pipe goes backwards a bit.. which means the air goes into the pipe but then has to flow back towards the front of the car.. plus being close to the engine the pipe gets a bit hot. but still seems to be working better then previous setups i've had.

hmmm dremel would be handy.. to make the hole in my airbox i had to use a drill bit with a circular cutting thing on it and drilled a few holes with that to get the basic shape then file it out a bit and also file the ribs in the box. dremel would of made it alot neater.

you should just give it a go... if you stuff up.. the worst case you have to go to the wreckers and buy another airbox or something.. not a big deal

Default My setup

Hi guys, just got pics of my 5 minute job...

Easily done, bored new hole in bottom of box, already had hole in engine bay cut out, got red pipe through the original hole in airbox lid (very tite! had to screw it in) attached filter setup to that, attached all the top half to my intake pipe, had to srew the piping into new hol at bottom, then through the hole in wheel arch, then fix it so that it sits nicely at the hole in front bar....
As i know it, no engine bay air get in, completely sealed enclosure... (original hole in airbox now has piping cap on it, in pic i think just had racetape...)

Rayos...

Eveything is so tite, its like 1 big peice, so this is how it goes on and comes off!

Ciao
