Default Mystery Hose

replacing the headers in my mates ea today with a set of extractors and whilst in the process we came accross a hose running from the headers along behind the air filter and into the manifold, we decided just to remove the hose and turned it over, car seemed fine, took it for a drive no problems...anyone know what we removed?

I think it aids in cold starts as it contains a bi metalic strip, when heated shuts off flow from the headers.

Yeah, assuming the car is CFI, it's the hot air duct, and it would seem useless.
It passes warm air into the intake until the manifold has heated up sufficiently. It is all to do with preventing fuel condensation in the manifold. Removing it shouldn't really have any noticable difference.
However, it is required to pass the emissions standards. If you go for a roadworthy, it will fail. If a semi-smart cop sees it, you'll get a canary. And, more to the point, the EPA would be quite quick to fine you.
