Default Who uses VoIP????

I just found out about VoIP... I would like to find out the pro's and con's of the service... I was also informed that can you get the telstra line rental at a basic fee of $18 and it is for internet services only.... Is this true???

From what I have been told, it sounds pretty good....

What is your opinion???

I use Skype (and firefly) as VOIP but haven't changed over completely..
Only because I don't want to do the whole set up here then when I move have to do it again.

It is an awesome idea though and I do know a few that have done the complete change.
I am not sure if you have to pay telstra anything at all.. but I am sure someone here will have the info your after..

I use it. It rocks. You need a 512kb connection for decent voice quality, rates are 10c local, 10c national (all untimed) and peanuts for overseas. And yep Telstra have a cheap line rental deal going for 19.95.

But as usual, all the normal caveats apply, go and look up the local providers for yourself (I use engin).

I also use it with Internode. The vocal quality is better than Telstra's services IMO. We just have Telstra's basic line service, and pay no more than 18 cents per call nationally anytime anyware in Australia with Internode. Love it!

I use skype for all overseas calls. Make as many calls as you want and talk as long as you like, totally free... as long as your overseas mates have skype as well. Easy.

Edit: you can have group calls as well, but it can be hard to understand sometimes. The voice quality one on one is quite good.

Yeah the only reason I dont use it is because Ive heard that the quality isn't that great, and varys alot; I reakon that would really tick me off.

Also doesn't the person on the other end have to have it? That would be another stumbling block for me.

I was really keen to do it as I just brought a new modem+router, but decided against getting Voip at the last minute.

How exactly is it setup? does the phone connect to your adsl router?
Do you have to have the same internet and VOIP company?
Does it count towards your download limit, mine is unlimited though?

Normal ADSL setup basically except the router/modem alows for 2 line connections which i use for voip and fax

The provider has to allocate a voip number though, it was part of the package I signed for

We have them at work to use between branches ie one to one no charge and 10c to ring out. Phone bill gone down by atleast 70%. BUT if anyone using internet at the same time as the phone, voice quality is terrible. So cant do porn while talking on phone!

I use the provider Faktortel, am based in NSW and have a Melbourne DID number (a local number Melb people can ring me on for the price of a local call - the call automatically diverts and rings immediately on my phone here). I will begin to use this number starting Febuary next year to target Victorian roads and safety industry for change:-)

http://www.faktortel.com.au/

Good priced provider, but some will offer cheaper mobile call rates. My ATA is a Linksys SPA3000, used the 'auto-config' program from provider to set-it. ATM on Hellstra's $19.95 line rental.

IF wireless keeps on improving, I'd save the $20 month and become fully independent. The line phone would then become incoming calls only.

We'll see.

That's good to hear as I have my adsl2 with internode and have been thinking about taking up their service.

Do it, you won't regret it!

I also use Internode's offering, Nodephone .
My monthly home phone bill, including line rental, is around the $23-$25 mark, depending on the number of calls that we make. Out of that cost, $19.95 is line rental! Not bad considering that we live outside the metro area and most of our calls would be STD calls to friends and family back in Adelaide.

Guys, if you want plenty of info on VoIP, check out the Whirlpool Forums, more importantly, the VoIP forum, http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=107

i'm currently got ADSL 512 unlimited with telstra, can I use VOIP with another provider while still using telstra internet?
Will it go onto my download limit?
Does the VOIP phone simply connect to you ADSL router?
Telstra don't have VOIP.

I am curious as to why your net a/c is with Hellstra, they are terrifyingly expensive.

The answer btw is 'yes, absolutely'.

I use telstra because were on a 12-month plan which only costs us $35, overall it's cheaper because Austar and everything is included in the one bill

If the VOIP box is connected to your ADSL router won't it go onto your download limit?

I'm supposed to include it in a TAFE assignment but most websites only explain what it is nothing more. anyone know any very good websites?

been using engin viop for the last 18 months.. can be a little variable at times, but that seems to be more todo with my isp (exetel) and my usage patterns on the internet (heavy to extreme D/L'ing).. have my sis and mum on it as well, free calls between us all.. 10c landline calls otherwise is a snack.. if the net drops out or the voip server cant be reached, it drops back to normal landline.. id recommend a goot adsl router withthe voip box built in, cuts right down on choppy calls while the internet is in use on a computer (or three, in my case)..

Unlimited. Pfft. That is the biggest joke. It in reality is a 20Gb plan as that is when they slow you down.
I'm also sure that you could achieve better savings if you look in to other ISP's, even without the single bill bundling!

Quote:

Most definitely. VoIP uses about the same uploads and downloads simultaneously as well. And we all know that Telstra is one of the very, very few ISP's that charge for uploads as well. So if you were to use VoIP over your Telstra connection, you will use your quota up twice as quick as if you were connected to another provider.
