If it is XP reboot your PC. chkdsk should run through automatically. Might take a while too.

Open the command line by going to Start > Run and typing in cmd.

At the command line type Chkdsk /f. Respond Y to the question (it will ask if it can run at next boot time as the hard disk is in use).

Reboot the PC and let the chkdsk run. Depending on the size of the hard drive and the amount of errors it will have it could take 15mins to 2hrs.

Do you have a WinXP CD?........if so boot off that by changing the boot order in the BIOS and making the CD/DVD Rom drive the 1st Boot Device, save changes and reboot the PC.

At the menu option select "R" to repair a Windows Installation, the PC will then locate the Windows installation location, usually "C:\Windows" which unless you have multiple OS on your system which you probably wont, select 1.

You may have to enter the password to get into the Administrator account if you have a password set up

At the command prompt type chkdsk /r

You can disable automatic checks. This isn't what I recall but see if it works:
1. Run the Registry Editor(Regedt32.exe).
2. Under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following subkey:
\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager
3. Change the BootExecute entry from:

autocheck autochk * /r\DosDevice\C:

To:

autocheck autochk *

above you want to delete the autochk entry altogether. export the entry first as I'm fairly sure I've used a different method.

The disk sounds like it really needs attention.

Im pretty sure defrag wont work unless you have atleast 50% free space, or some percentage like that. The GUI version anyway.

If you have 2 different partitions like C and D, move all your stuff to D (or to which ever partition your Windows isn't on and just reformat the the partition that Windows is installed on.

If you have any programs installed on D just delete the program's folder (way quicker than uninstalling).

If any of them can't be deleted just leave them, because when you reinstall Windows, the registry will be wiped and they will know longer be known to the OS system and you can just delete them after that.

That's what I did. It still took 10hrs but last time I wiped everything and it took easily double that.

type in the following:

Quote:
chkdsk /f /r /x
The /x will force a dismount on the volume. Because you are running windows, it can't dismount and ask you if you want chkdsk ran on reboot... anyway, why would you want to run defrag.. waste of time really....

This little bugger can be a bit of a runaround.

As you've already tried various remedies, go to
Start/Control Panel/Administrator Tools/Services
and check that you have "Event Log" as a running service?

Report back...

Down load and install avast , see what that brings up

then if it still wont defrag do /run/defrag /f

it should ask if you want to go to a reboot ..

I suspect you have either a virus or a sick puta , gat back to us if these suggestions dont work and good luck .

ok, good.... that will save a long and frustrating journey.

I would tend to run with atec's suggestion and virus check for starters.

edit: oh, you already have.

I would consider a repair. Do you have your Windows cd?

Everytime I've done a repair it's stuffed my computer more than fixed it. It's still worth a try. If all else fails, nuke the bastard

How many accounts do you have on your computer? You can have an account and set it to have adminstrator priviledges without having a different account for both.

Yeah if you have set adminstrator priviledges for your account it should be the same password as normal.

I would say boot in safe mode and try do a virus scan but I have PcCillin aswell and it won't work in safe mode as I have tried it.

Joe, have you installed xp before? If so, you might want to consider a repair installation (as opposed to recovery console).

Have a look here http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx
or google for similar info.
