OK long story short.
My GF owns a Barina (Opel Corsa) like this one. Very good car, but, this is just weird. I let the fuel run very very low, my bad I know but I was going to get around to it. Then we had a couple of really hot days and I think the heat evaporated what little fuel there was left. So I got on my pushy and put in ~9.5L of fuel. Tried to start it but no go. It gets close and wont kick over, starter motor is working. The other week we lost the original key, but ill come back to that. So now it is down at the closest garage getting a service. But they cant start it either. He called me and asked if I still had he original key, I say no as I just lost it about a week ago. Apparently this is not good as there is some kind of security feature on that key fob, and the car wont start because its not reading that key. So what I am trying to figure out is whether this is a true story, or whether the garage just cant find out what is wrong. They pulled out an error code which apparently says it needs that original key. How bizarre is that! What if like us, you were silly and lost the original! I said that it could be the fuel pump..but they dont think so. Anyway, anyone heard of this, and since when does a fairly cheapish car have this feature!

I would not be surprised at all if it had a chipped key to be honest, one would guess 1/2 hour in the on position may re-learn much like the fords, but who knows.

let me get this straight..
you lost the key, but have been driving it around still then you ran it out of fuel then you put the fuel in and now it they're saying it needs the original key........ do yourself a favor.....replace teh fuel filter...its probably picked up a stack of junk from the tank..... if it was needing a code, IMO it shouldnt turn over.... if it helps you to find some information....its an SB(model code) barina |

Well I guess you need to confirm if the key is a transponder type for a start.

I lost the original last week, and didn't drive it since, it was mega low on fuel. We had a few hot days in a row, then I went to start the car with the spare key as I had lost the original. It wouldn't start. So I assumed that it was just out of fuel all together, so I got some and put in ~9L. Still the bugger wouldn't start. Starter motor tries, it almost started and then died. Engine warning light flashes, so I took it (pushed) to the nearest garage and they called me just then saying that an error has come up and that apparently it needs the original key as its a safety feature. So they say.... So that what I am trying to find out first. And yes I agree the filter should be changed.

There must be a way to bybass it or reset the feature. Thats just silly having a car that will only ever work with one key.

If it says you need the original key then why are you asking for other possibilities?
I know it's probably a pain is the a$$ to get another one but as the mechanic and others have said thats the problem. |

Well the mechanic isn't 100%, and I wanted to double check as I am not 100% they know what they are talking about. And I refuse to believe that a company would make a car that can only use one key, its no BWM or Merc, its a base model Opel!

Sounds similar to a Honda system. Some of them have an isolator and a rolling code which the black everyday keys use and a red master key that can reset them or something. I was told never use the master key as the everyday key and that it costs $500ish to replace. Holden Commodores started using keys with rolling codes around VR-VS didn’t they?
The thing is that the Honda system works on an isolator first (and I guess that the Barina one should as well). Like MADNC 8 I’m a bit suss about the cause of the problem, it shouldn’t even try to turn the starter motor over if the isolator doesn’t let it.

Well the engine never started, it was just the starter motor trying.
It better not be $500....

I assume the Barina must be a manual because my grandfather has an automatic one and I would mention it and the word good in the same sentence (oh wait, I think I just did). That car is so slow it holds up traffic. The pedals are awkwardly offset to the left because the RH front wheel is where the accelerator should be. So where DO they put the clutch pedal?? The indicators are on the left and instead of having individual lights to tell you what blinker is on it just has one light that flashes. There is not a single bit of English in the whole interior, just symbols so they can sell it in different markets wihtout changing a lot. Only thing its got is an outside temperature guage and a nice big battery, actually the battery is half the size of the motor. They are a really dangerous little car that had to have dual airbags on all models to make them crashworthy.
My grandfather has not had a radio since the first time his battery went flat from lack of use. Holden wanted $40 to get the code that wasn't supplied with the car when he bought it new. The manual does not have any intructions whatsoever on how to use the audio system, worst car ever. I can't belive care yards are still asking $10,000 for this model with 80,000Km, his has only done 20K in 9 years, hasnt even had its second service, LOL. |

What year is your car?? Mum used to have a SB barina. I think it was a 94 or 95 model?
I dont remember the key being anything special however, but maybe they got updated? The early cars were absolute JUNK! mums was an auto, and pumped out a whole 44kw.. perhaps you have the upgraded 60kw engine... |

Just be thankful it is not a mercedes you drive around on the spare key but if the battery is disconnected for any reason or drops below a certain voltage, you can only use the original key to start it, and if you do not have the original key you buy a new key and computer, have the computer installed then leave the new key in the glovebox for an hour for it to talk to the computer, and learn what it is supposed to do key $400.00 computer $5000.00, found out a lot of this when my daughter worked in spares for mercedes, oh and do not damage a grille on a current model $1100, supplied not fitted, tail light lens $675.00.
Unless you are well insured do not hit a late model merc unless you kill it properly |

I really think its a fuel pump issue. But first see if it has spark.
My theory is once the pump runs dry it can no longer pickup fuel under its own suction until the air is purged out. First try priming it by putting it into the ON position and listen to the fuel pump whir finish then back to ACC and repeat about 10 times, then try to start. If the usual whir noise is not there it normally means the pump its dead. If the whir is louder than normal, then its bone dry inside it. Try adding 10 more litres |
