I was looking at buying my dearly beloved either an iPod or an iRiver for a present.
Has anyone bought either of these? What are the advantages of each, what features are better on each and what are the disadvantages. Also what should I be paying for the unit. Thanks in advance Steven

If you see the right people you can get a 40gb iriver for $500, better than an ipod in my books.

The iRivers have like a hard drive, and colour screens, radio etc all the gadgets. Whilst the iPods are just normal black dot screens. I'd personally go for the iRiver for the features and the price is good for what you are getting.

Who makes IRiver steve? Cant say i've heard of that one
There are plenty of MP3's on the market that are as good as, if not better than the Ipod. The missus got a Creative Zen Micro that has 5Gig, more than a Ipod mini and about $50 cheaper. The guy in the shop saiud they found them better than Ipod's Shop around and see what you can get |

I think it is the brand. like iRiver is the brand, because there was a smaller one in a jb hi-fi catalogue and above it said for the brand "iRiver". and the big iRivers had model numbers where the ipods were either the mini or the certain amount ones.

It appears iRiver gives you more for your money and iPod (Apple) spend more of your money on their marketing.
I am leaning towards the iRiver at this stage. Steven

I'd heavily lean towards iRiver. They've actually got firmware support, they'll play more than apple's semi-proprietary format, even OGG in some cases, and they look better.
Oh, and it's not a Mac! ![]() |

This is what you get the with the iRiver btw
* Remote Controller Without Display * Installation CD * User's Manual * Carrying case * USB 2.0 Cable * AC Adapter (DC 5.0V, 2A) * Docking Cradle * External Mic. * Line-in/out Cable * Quick Start Guide * External Battery Pack * USB host cable Note the docking station, case and remote control justifies the extra cash(dock for ipod is $59, case is anywhere between $29-$69, remote control is $69, voice recorder is $69, radio AM/FM accessory is $39) So roughly it has over $250 worth of extra accessories than the ipod photo and if you can get it for $499 then you're laughing good luck mate A quick search on the web found the H340 $549 for the 40GB... pretty good price http://www.minidisc.com.au/product_i...roducts_id=466 Last edited by Franky; 01-05-2005 at 12:59 AM. |

Less than 300 bucks for my iPod mini 4gb. Doesn't sound like much but the unit is a little ripper! I have about 600 odd songs on there at the moment. The only thing I find it lacks is an inbuilt FM radio.

Ive got the iPod 30gb and have around 22gb of songs on there at the moment. I also picked up a nifty little iPod mount made by Belkin that has adaptors for car cup holders. Im either gonna pick up the fm transmitter or the cable so that i can play my ipod thru my car head unit. The transmitter is pretty cool, transmits the ipods music over a frequency so you can tune head units or any other stereo into it.

I would go the iRiver and perhaps spend some money on some decent aftermarket headphones too. My brother has had a few iPods, and while they are good, the cost of new battery's, lack of FM tuner and higher cost seem to make me sway towards the iRiver product. Make sure you shop around though, its amazing how prices can vary.

I have a 15gb ipod and I never use it, I think it's great for long trips but when you drive the only thing it's good for is the radio. I don't take mine to school anymore because they are banned, but it's probably not worth me buying another some time down the track

iRiver definitely. Cheap as in China, but they are both manufactured here.. iRiver has only grown in the past few years but they have excellent products.

Ibought the 20Gig iRiver from Dick Smith Powerhouse for $499. Will let you know how it goes after tomorrow.
iPod shuffle for $145 doesn't compare as it is only 512mb. Equivalent iPod to the 20Gig iRiver does not have radio or the other facilities the iRiver has. The decision became very easy in the end. Thanks for all you help everyone. Regards Steven

IRIVER!!! I have the iRiver H320 20gb one.
JB hifi has 20gb ones for $496, they are awesome.. I've had mine since november and its my favourite thing i own! ![]() Mine plays video also and you can view pics, its really cool. They come with everything too, the case and all the accesories. Its got a built in voice recorder too.. very good. Also the thing i love about the iriver is it keeps getting better as they're firmware upgradeable, when i got mine it couldn't play video so i updated to the latest firmware and presto, now it can play video. I'd go iriver ![]() |
