Snakes in suburban areas.

Just thought i would share an experience that happened about 2 hours ago.
We live on the outskirts of Cranbourne, with open paddocks approx 300m away, and also have 2 Rottweilers, mum 6yo and son 15mth.
Mum was barking quite frantically, different to her normal "alerting" bark. when she would not stop we out to see what was upsetting her, and were confronted by a very aggressive Copperhead approx 1m in length.

As we have neighbours on three sides with young children, and not wanting to put the dogs at risk overnight, we put an end to the snakes aggressive behaviour.

Before i get flamed, if it had happened during daylight then i would have quite happily let it be. Being dark, i was not prepared to take the risk of knowing it could have gone into a neighbours yard.

In our local paper today there was an article about a Jack Russell that was bitten and had to be put down.

So just a reminder that they are out there and to remain vigilant.

Nothing wrong with killing snakes. If there in the middle of the bush and your bush walking let them be. If there in a suburban area with kids around then kill them. Whats more important a childs life or a venimous snake?

There was one in Mark's backyard aswell. Gardeners found it while they were doing a clean up. Not sure what type it was. Since then, I rarely let my little one play in his backyard when we're at his place.

I was raised on a farm and always took the "shotty" with me when in the paddocks working the sheep , and a few times I was confronted by an "agro" snake . Once driving the tractor I must have driven over the tail of one with the front wheel and he "flicked" himself up and landed near the footrest , mate, the tractor was driving it's self for a couple of hundred metres

: till I made sure he'd fallen off , I wasn't in a sharing mood . Hahaha .

If it was him or me , I looked after No1 , only good "agro" snake is a dead one.
When you've had one heading for you looking mean , you get to know the feeling of FEAR , and "I ain't no hero" . Lol . But if they're near a house or where kids are , they gotta go . If they're in the bush and not aggressive , let 'em go .

Be careful , most snake bite victim's are bitten "trying to kill the snake".

Too true. We despatch snakes out here almost daily. But only if they come onto our patch of ground. Any other time, they get left well alone.

if it appears to be agro, no doubt id kill it...better him than me

if its in a tree or just catchin some sun, ill throw him in a pillow case and drop him off in the bush.....(as long as i no exactly that hes not venomous) the joys of having a friend with snakes and reptiles you appreciate them more after they almost kill you

I'm in Mordialloc (27k from Melb CBD) and 2 years ago walking along the Mordialloc Creek a small 1 metres long black snake slithered across the path....scared the crap out of me....

we had red bellies when i lived on the farm in NSW - They would camp in things around the house...old bits of machinery etc....wed get boiling water to get them out then flatten them with a spade.. In saying that tho i think snakes are incredible "striking" hehe to look at... And i would love to have a little pet python to watch tv with

Had same thing in the backyard here yesterday, first one in the eleven years we`ve lived here. Only about 4 ft long, took two swings at him with the axe but too quick then he lunged at me. Eventually got a post hole shovel and chopped him, got the back end but buggered if I can find the rest

Unfortunate but I don't take my Border Collie down to the river for a walk along the tracks anymore - he's devastated. Too many snakes and a close call for him recently made it too dangerous.

Snakes are loving it down there right now.

I was also running down one of those bitumen tracks recently and came across a lady screaming at her spaniel. The dog had found a snake and was standing there barking it's head off at it. I managed to run up and grab the dog and pulled it away.

Close call !! She was very greatfull.

My thoughts too!

The Greenies probably wouldn't agree though! Gee those people often have so many priorites out of whack! They so often put animals before people.

Yep they are ..
I have a Pet snake "Tabby" is her name and she is great to have .. feed 1 time a week (Rabbit or jumbo rat) clean tank 3 -4 days after a feed . and the best thing is she isn't like a dog that barks at night or a cat that sits on your sofa and leaves hair everywhere .. she just stays in her cage and you don't hear a thing from her ..and she is fun as well .... I have even had her in my car one x'mass time .. cutting a few laps and there was these young guys in there VB-VH comm going Boom Boom Boom ... Tabby is hanging from my roll cage and she feels the subs going at the car sitting beside me and she makes her way to my passenger front window and I being the smart *** I am wanted to see what she would do and what these other lads would do so I put the window down .. Tabby is about 1 - 1 1/2 foot out the window and the driver in the commie seen her and freaked and went through the red light .. when the light went green I put up the window and slowly took off .. the guys in the commie went around the roundabout and come back very slowly looking and pointing at me .. I ****ed myself laughing ..

Where I live there is a problem with Brown and Tiger snakes .. As I have Tabby I don't have the problems that all my neighbours have.

we keep the trucks on a property in pearcedale and have 2 big brown snakes living around the shed somewhere. they've only been seen once sunning themselves on the concrete pad. my sister was having a bbq at seaford beach a couple of weeks ago and had a copper head go into the bushes near her. she called the police (dont know what she expected them to do.) they had'nt turned up when she left a couple of hours later so she warned the other people around about it. they are getting a lot more common in built up areas

They're like that, until it comes down to an animal vs one of their own loved ones. Then you'll see how quickly their ideals change...

I had a harmless carpet snake about 6 to 8 foot long living in the back yard. He found a home under the box trailer
The dogs would leave it alone , I would leave it alone and it left us alone
It was in our yard for about 2 weeks it would do the bolt when the lawnmower or whipper snipper would start but would return when I stopped mowing

I live in Penrith and we have a large reserve out the back of our place that is home to hundreds of snakes, they are mostly red belly blacks.
I’ve been told they keep the browns away so I leave them alone, plus they seem quite timid as every time my dog comes across them they take off.

im quite surpised that the dogs didn't kill the snake, ours seem to kill them. Get home sometimes and find a dead snake or two in the backyard.

Have had the odd brown snake at home .... I have a shovel handy around different parts of the house/property ... and I am just NW of Windsor.

We have a Border Collie ... and she'd rather play with them than kill them.
I just hope she is quicker than the snake ... but I think one day she will get bitten (then it will be too late).

The main thing we do is keep the grounds around the house clear and mowed short. And I steer clear of the dam in the Summer (as they head for water and hang around it).

we had a snake in my mums room. UPSTAIRS i will add.
i didnt even know they could do that :P

if you lift up the carpet you will still see the blood stained wood below

and dogs are smart enough not to fight a snake often. our old dog used to bring us blue tounge lizards all the time. (90% of the time still alive)
but if he sore a snake he would stay well back and bark his head off.

i live with broccoli plantation right around our block and our dog used to follow the old farmer around all day. and the farmer loved our dog being there beacause he always knew if there was a snake around he would find out straight away.

We get a fair few on the farm, but neighbours get them mostly...
One was sunning itself in our driveway when i drove in, and i thought it would move but it took off in the same direction i was going so i parked the Landy on top of it until i found the shovel..
There was a Tiger snake in a mates tent when we went camping, he thought it would be good to use my grandads 12 gauge to kill it, (yes, in the tent) he got it, and went tits up from the recoil, plus blew a hole in his sleeping bag, tent and esky... There was blood spatter everywhere aswell... aah good times.
