Melbourne to Adelaide

can someone let me know which way is quickest to drive to adelaide from melbourne(werribee).i`ll have my wife and very impatient 3yo daughter with me? any help is appreciated.

never been to adelaide, if you use www.whereis.com.au it can tell you the quickest and easiest way/s to get to adelaide.

I've done this trip a few times from the eastern burbs.

Get to Ballarat, then head towards, Ararat, Stawell, Horsham through that way. Depending on how you drive and how many breaks you take, should be about 7.5 to 9 hours.

The road has improved, but don't speed.

Go north along Derrimut Road, turn left on to the Western Highway. Leave car in gear for around seven hours and take car out of gear in Adelaide.

I go the way XRLightning said, and the road is pretty crappy once you get close to South Australia, alot of dips. And watch out for cops

Drive to airport and fly there .. thats the best and fastest way

Come out the back road of werribee ( towards the geelong / baccus marsh T intersection on it ) you know the one i mean, turn right and go up to baccus marsh.

at baccus marsh jump onto the princess freeway and head west.

by doing this you cut all of the city traffic out and join the highway in a quieter spot.

if your running with a full tank you wont need to fuel up until you hit horsham ( and thats just for a rest and toilet break as well )

other than that the trip is resonambly good with towns not to far apart if you need to stop for the little one or the wife.

the trip will take you 7 hours 30 minutes with the one stop travelling at the speed limit.

It is bumpy when you get into south OZ but most of the road has been upgraded and you can do 110 kph not the boring 100 as in most of vic, and yes mr plod does keep an eye on the roads.

You wouldnt NEED to fill up at Horsham as it would be max 300km from Werribee, so you would be on well over half a tank. However, after Horsham there are limited places to fill up, especially if you use 98ron fuel. Horsham is the best place to stop for food/petrol as there are all the petrol stations, food outlets etc...

After Horsham, there is nothing in Nhill except for a small Caltex, nothing Kaniva... so you would have to get to Bordertown where there are BPs etc which have 98. We usually get to Bordertown easily on one tank from Melbourne. There is also food there.

Bordertown is only 270km from Adelaide. You would be fine from there anyway.

Wave on your way past Mt Barker!

PS, there are also BPs in Keith if you are desperate but they are expensive.

im looking forward to giving the beast a decent run.
i just run normal juice so topping up wont be a prob,i wont be speeding so that wont be a drama.
interested to see the fuel economy too.
i will wave on the way past mt parker xrchic so keep your eyes peeled on the

My how things change over the years, used to get to Adelaide in 6.5hours. 140 mph in spots, the 70s was the era.

buy something to entertain the 3yo. IE in car video games. I wouldn't do an interstater without kid's entertainment otherwise I'd arrive at the destination but the kids wouldn't.

I did Sydney to Melbourne in 8 hrs which included dining in a Pizza Hut in Albury for all-you-can-eat. That was in a Barina! Wouldn't try that these days, you would end up in jail! 140 used to be a 3 point fine

ive got the in car dvd etc so it should be ok.
im going there coz some friends are coming from the u.s and we havent seen them for two years,plus we are staying at her mums house in nth adelaide which she uses only 6 weeks a year.(she wont be there)so thats damn cool!!!

I wouldn't mind doing the drive in our Peugeot. Should be able to get to Melbourne and half way back before having to fill up again.

If at all possible leave very early in the morning while 'bubby' is still asleep, should get to horsham before they wake up. have done this regularly and it saves your sanity.
Also have done the adelaide trip in 6.5hrs in the '70s as the speedo went up the fuel gauge went down, remember you lose 1/2hr when you get to south Aus. and travel about 10yrs backwards......ha,ha. I have friends in Adelaide and I love going there, great place.

The road between the Vic border and Bordertown has now been completly re surfaced and is probably the best piece of road between Melbourne and Adelaide BUT, the speed limit is still 100 which I assume is a carry on from when it was a goat track.

The speed limit through Bordertown has also been reduced from 100 to 80.

As Doc eluded to the police do patrol the area between the border and Taliem Bend very heavily now.

as sgt_doofey said, get to the Barossa for some wines, but also get to the McLaren vale region (south of Adelaide) for some more fine wines. pm me for details if you need them. Can also take an enjoyable cruise to victor harbor from the region. that is assuming your here for the tourist type thing. in answer to your question XRLightning gave you what you need to know.

its a easy run just follow the direction above but i found with the kids all 4 of em it was better to leave around 3 pm then just stop off at maccas in horsham for tea around 6 and then head back up to the big park/ reserve and let then run around and play to tire em out plus it breaks up the driving you should get there just after midnight depending on where in adelaide you have to get to the only thing i don,t look forward to over ther is all the ENWS metal holes in the road you,ll know what i,m on about when you get there and so will your suspension

Don't they have them in Vic?
You get used to them here. I could drive with my eyes closed and still dodge them on my routine trip to work. (likely hit something else though)

Other places of interest in Adelaide (and there isn't really that many!)
Victor Harbour as suggested.

Mount Lofty for a view of Adelaide from the hills.
A drive through the Adelaide Hills.
The Central Markets in Grote/Gouger Streets in the city.
Adelaide Oval.
A drive through the Riverland and along the Murray river. (About 300kms and 3 hours.)

Yep, the Birdwood Motor Museum is still there. And it's Hahndorf. Great german pub there wil plenty of different beers on tap.

LOL we live about 10 min from Hahndorf and the kids go to school there. And we are very close to the Barossa and Birdwood. Been to the German Arms many times... great schnitzels there.

Rundle Mall, Westfield Tea Tree Plaza and Westfield Marion are good for a wander through if you're keen to look through some shops. Jetty Rd at Glenelg is another good spot.

Go the GLENELG tram. Adelaide oval. Catch the guided busway to Tea Tree Plaza, but don't try to catch the bus to the airport form GLENELG because it doesnt go there and its a HELL of a walk from the main road. That was my only gripe about Adelaide, who go on and on what a good bus service they have and you are FORCED to catch a cab to the airport form Glenelg, which is like the next suburb.

Everything in Adelaide is cheap as. You can get a reserved seat at the cricket for the same price as general entry in Sydney.Victor Harbour was nice too....
