Does anyone know which grade oil that v8 supercars use? Also is it synthetic or mineral?

But I would think they would use a thicker oil as they normally have to heat the oil before they start the car from cold

Most of them have sponsorship obligations so you'll never get the truth out of them. Would be nice to know though

I got a laugh a few years ago when at bathurst I think it was skaife who won, Mobil 1 took out full colour adds in magazines saying that mobil 1 keep skaife's car running with plastic bags in the grill. This was the same year loundes was winning when he had to retire due to overheating (also due to plastic bags). Gibson motorsport was also supposed to be running mobil1. It didn't help them much.

Russell uses Castrol Edge, oh no, that's Havoline. Richards uses Edge. HRT and HSV use Mobil 1. etc. As if.
I wouldn't bother using what they use - their engines are rebuilt every 500km or so, so unless you want to be doing that. I'd use whatever spec it says to use in the book - if you're in a colder area, go for a 5W instead of 10W, and if hotter, then maybe a 50W instead of 40W.

Keep in mind they have dry sumps and crankcase is in 15Lb or so vacuum..
With oil cooler...They don't need cold start or alot of short trips [unless your name is Mark] I'd say a light synthetic oil....

I have seen several teams using the Mobil1 in the gold container (full synthetic). Breaking the seal and filling up the boot based oild container.

Could one of you ‘experts’ please explain why is it so hard to accept that they would use Mobil1 or an equivalent full synthetic from any or the other Oil sponsors?? If there is a better oil out there that they may be using than name it!!

Given that the engine only revs to 7500rpm compared to the 19000 that F1 engines run to, and I remember reading of an interview with Larry Perkins stating that the main bearings are no different to road car engine with same tolerances, I really doubt that the engine oil would need to be anything too special.? If an oil company says that the oil you purchase was the same as what the race teams use and it turns out to be not true, well then that's false advertising isn't it? and there are laws aginst that isn't there?

The Castrol synthetic diff fluid you can buy at any auto shop is the exact same stuff that was run in Perkins' Bathurst winning V8 in 1997.

The oil is heavy because of the heat & strain that racing puts on an engine. But the fact they run Castrol/Mobil/Havoline stickers, doesnt mean they run the same oil as road cars run. Its the same brand, but thats about it..

What I am trying to find out is what is the most protective oil. What will make the engine last longer in hot stop start and very hard driven cars?

Mate I use Fuchs and it seems to be alright. I am no expert and there would not be many on here that are either. You will only get an opinion from these places. try jumping on the net an reading some of the material and what the oil does. There is oils for many different aplications and to suit many different engine tolerances and performance needs. So what do you have and what oild should you use. there is probably 5 or 6 oils staring you in the face, trouble is its like when I was a kid making a chioce for lollies, THERE WERE JUST TOO MANY. but you can't go wrong couse most of the popular lollies all taste good any way

True .But think about it.If your car needs protection then whats is the best oil.The best way is to change oil regularly but then what oil handles extremes. Which oil holds its lubricating properties under extreme conditions? It seems that normal oil lossess its properties with heat and hard revving motors. This would then scour the bearings, wear piston rings etc.
Does the ultimate oil really not exist but just frequent changes the answer.

For really hard racing use I have found that straight 50wt racing oil holds on way better than multi grades, you want to warm up before running hard though.
The single weights are made from a different base than the multi grades. This info was given to me from some professional racers, although not supercars, but I think more relevant to me,as there engines are closer to ours and are wet sumped, since trying it,oil pressure is more stable, and it looks and smells way better than a multi grade after 4 hours racing.. |

Britek use Penrite off the shelf oils throughout the car as told by Jason Bright during pit tour at Barbagallo this year. Toll racing use special blends as told by PR man for Toll during pit tour at Barbagallo this year. Also I agree with Bill R changing oil often is more beneficial.
