As long as the brakes aren't the premium setup and are just the standard SII or SIII brakes the 15 will fit over. My Series 3 220 Sedan has a 15 inch spare from factory and it fits over the standard SIII brakes on the front. I have had plenty of flat tyres and the 15 inch spare fits on the front with no scrubbing on anything. The most likely problem is you are running E series wheels with the wrong offset.

nah, e-series wheels will definitely fit. The offset makes them sit out past the guards!
I put e-series wheels on the front of an AU1 once by mistake. In about 2002.
