Hello,
What is the procedure for transferring an interstate license to SA? I am intending to stay/work over there for a year, but I won't have a fixed address. Is it possible to use my parents' address in victoria as the fixed address? Is the procedure for license transfer relatively straightforward (e.g. walk in, fill out form, surrender Vicroads license to be destroyed, take picture, take new license)? thankyou |

They won't issue you a license unless you have a local address. You'll have to use a friends address to get one but after that you should be able to use a PO box for renewals and such. Same with the car rego.
Having said all that, if you're only there for 12 months and not in one spot I'd just keep my head down and hold on to the vic licence and rego. Bushbasher

Yes, a quick trip to Transport SA with your 100 points of ID and you should be right. But, as Bushbasher said, if your licence is still valid in Victoria (and, better still, will remain valid for the duration of your stay), then you should be right. Just keep your nose clean.

Does anyone know if I will be insured on a Victorian license, even if I am an SA resident? |

What state you hold your licence in is irrelevant to an insurance company. You just need to make sure you advise them of the garaged address of your car (i.e. that it's now kept in South Australia). This can affect the excess they will charge you in the event of a claim etc. Licence state-of-issue only relevant to police/road authority. |

Thanks everyone for the replies, if I can get an indication of how long the conversion process takes, i'll see if it worth doing, or I may just call up Transport SA myself. |

Read this page, get the required forms, and pay your hard earned to the MAN. Or stay with your Vic licence and say you're only here for 2 months...

SA is a pretty backward place when it comes to some laws. From what I can figure out, by the Transport SA website, as long as you hold a current licence, you’ll be right. Regardless of what state it’s issued in. You’re not technically changing your address and as long as you are still paying bills in Victoria, you should be right.
http://www.sa.gov.au/subject/Transpo...'s+licence By the Vicroads site, you are OK because you’re not using an interstate licence here for a period of more than three months. It would be different if it was the other way around. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...rsLicences.htm I wouldn’t bother doing anything with it. If you get pulled over, just tell the cops that you’re over there working and don’t know how long for. Now, why the hell are you going to work over there for, WHY? ![]()

If you want to change your licence over in S.A from VIC, it the same day process. Just rock up with your VIC licence in hand, along with some money and they'll do the change over on the spot.
You are allowed to be in S.A for a total of 3 months before you have to change your licence over. In saying that, that's only relevant if the police pull you over and you let it slip how long you've been in this state. Hopefully that answers your question properly

What area are you going to be in? Maybe try the white pages on line for the nearest branch to where you're going to be. Or post here what area you'll be in so someone can point you to the nearest banch.
Cost I can't help you with sorry.

Thank you all. I was pleasantly surprised at the high level of customer service Transport SA has, compared to Vicroads. They had attendants waiting at the door greeting with a smile, and handing me the appropriate forms and a pen. The process didn't even take 10 minutes and the whole conversion only cost $15.

yes they have streamlined their customer service a great deal over the last 12-18 months. It used to be atrocious but now a great deal better.
