I love my XA/C Fords. After driving my EB Fairmont 5 litre from Perth to Melbourne, to Sydney and back in `99, they really are totally stamped into my Ford notebook, I`m biased, I`ve worked for Ford in a mechanical position since `94, and well, theyre my favourite driver since, I thought the 5.4 3V was nice, till it had to be pulled to bits all the time, and the Boss is just plain horrible.(No, it is, and no amount of dyno time will change my attitude to it,its a plain pink skinned piglet) AU 5 litres are beaut, but I`ve never owned one yet, but plan to. IMO AU Five litres are future classics, only for the reputation forged by its Windsor heritage. They really are Fords best incarnation of the compact V8.(Clevo blah mafia wah wah) And theres the rub. Compact engines are all the rage in todays market. Ford forgot its heritage and blew its beans on Boss and Hawaii Five O.

Another note for youngins although I'm still young lol is to join a club. Club rego saves a huge amount! Will probably never sell my Xy also, only add more to the collection lol. Test drove a new Hyundai I30 me and the wife are looking at as we are trying for our first kid and her little car is two door so upgrading to four. New cars are great on fuel, and it drove great and all, but lacks that something you get in a classic! They don't feel so mechanical anymore. Besides although I don't have the time I love tinkering with old cars, new cars have to many gadgets and electronics for my liking to play with.

Would not swap my old dinosaur Fairlane for all the sterile bells and whistles of anything in the modern era.

The problem with the 5.4 is it has a lot of friction. The long stroke has too much friction for my liking, the pistons have to increase speed just for the crankshaft to turn at the same rate. Plus having extra valves, and on the DOHC version, 4 cams and 32 valves. That equals parasitic loss. Also, I hate the spark plug issue. Other than that, the low end torque delivery and throttle response is fantastic. Fantastic for pulling heavy loads. The upper RPM range lacks power delivery, and overall fuel economy is crap. Give me an EcoBoost.

Now I will write a a response that has something to do with the actual topic. The current generation is lacking common sense, they lack passion for domestic manufacturing, and they love ordinary. I read a lot of extremes. People who love any POS that gets good fuel economy, and those from people who hate anything with good economy, and still use phrases like "no replacement for displacement." I do not fit in to either of these moulds, yet I am passionate about the big 3, I like other brands too, but I will always hate Toyota for the mediocrity it brings to the non-passionate people who claim to be car enthusiasts, that declare Toyota to be anything better than what it is.

New cars IMO are just vulgar. Stylistically I don't see how an FG XR6 is anywhere near as good looking as an EB XR6... and don't reply with "well the FG would thrash the EB in a race..." because thats not what I'm saying.
I just think BA-FG, all the XR6s looked too clinical. *Flame shield activated.*

Lets keep this about : The new generation of car enthusiasts...
Putting down one an others engine choices will simply see this closed and a few warning points from me to those responsible. |

We all like what we like. I've owned an EB and own an FG. I prefer the lines and the styling of an FG. Ask me again in 20 years and the answer may be reversed but we won't know until then. There isn't a person in the world that could change my opinion about which style I like today. |

One of the biggest problems with young drivers is that they throw the word "enthusiast" around too much for it to carry any real weight.
Being an enthusiast with anything means that you have a large interest in whatever that may be, if you love something then you look after it. You want to spend time on your car and just simply appreciate it, it's not boring or a chore. You don't need to tell people you are a car enthusiast, people can tell by talking to you and the way you present your car.

The majority of Gen Y's being actual car enthusiasts is very minimal. The majority just like a set of wheels and a loud exhaust, maybe a blow off valve if they can be bothered but other than that theres nothing in it.
I myself am 22, have worked in a few different industries including automotive (both at Street Fords and now at Brad Garlick Ford), have owned a BA, an Escort Mk2, a ED XR6 and am now picking up a '91 5.0L LTD. It is hard to judge the whole generation because the enthusiast rate just isn't what it used to be.

I have my ba because i can drive it every day withiut fear of anything going wrong. I like both classic and modern and once i buy a house i'll be looking for a classic ford. But if i can only have 1 car ill always take a modern.
