Default Re: Victoria Govt to introduce Fuel Price App

example. From Fuelspy. (remind me - why do we need a government app again?)

E10

Apco Newcomb 164.9 (cheapest)
United Portarlington 175.9 (nearest)
BP Wallington 189.9 (most expensive locally)

given I never use BP anyway, the 'real' difference in price, right now, for me, is 10c so well within the 'cup of coffee' range

to drive from my house to the cheapest servo to fill up would cost me $3.80 each way. Returning home negates all of the saving.

I head out to Portarlington / Drysdale / Queenscliff every month or so. Driving through Geelong, I find the servos are pretty much on par with each other. So if you live around that area, its probably not going to be as rewarding to "shop around". Though sometimes you do come across a rogue servo that is 20c+ cheaper than the rest....there is a Shell servo outbound to Melb that seems to do this.

Whilst there are existing apps, their price updates come from community reporting. The gov app is suppose to interface directly into the servos and automate the process. It'll be more timely and accurate. Cost? I can't imagine it would cost that much to develop such an app, thought they will need to have an API for servos to feed into.

They could have simply licenced the same app used already in NSW and Tasmania. Which is more accurate than Fuelspy.

point is, for me, no it's not worth really getting too stressed about saving a few cents. Don't get me wrong, I think all fuel is way too expensive, but the difference in servos just isn't worth worrying about
I'm similar. Ave 2-300km/wk. Fill up every 3 weeks or so. Rarely even look at the price. Fill tank to full, which is about 70L (80L tank) and drive until empty and rinse and repeat. I accept that diesel doesn't run on a weekly cycle and doesn't tend to get the big price swings. I'm a brand snob and use bp, although OTR have sold out to shell (viva energy) so might have to switch allegiance.

I'm aware everyone's situation is different so not suggesting everyone stop looking for cheap fuel.

Why we need the app? it is a response from the government saying 'hey we are doing something for you to save money" when in reality just another useless political stunt to appease the gullible who believe in them.

An example from a few Months ago (NSW FuelCheck) just to show there can be big differences.
The 5 Sites shown are all within an easy drive depending on if I am near home or work.
A quick look at the App ensured I didn't go to my local one which was 49cents more per litre when compared to the one on my way home from work.
Saved me close to 25 bucks...nothing to be sneezed at.
