Default Older drivers among hoons

But i thought only P platers were hoons? :
http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/s...0-2682,00.html

Quote:
DRIVERS as old as 60 and as young as 14 are having their cars seized by police for drag racing, burnouts or revving their engines.

More than 1400 cars have been impounded under the State Government's anti-hoon laws since they were introduced in May 2005.
Of those, only 35 vehicles were driven by women. The oldest drivers were charged with "sustained wheel spins" and "engine or tyre noise".

Assistant Commissioner Grant Stevens said the vast majority of hoon drivers were men aged 17 to 34, with the worst group being 20 to 24.

"Overall, we have had more than 1400 vehicle seizures and the vast majority of those are male drivers," he said.

Under the legislation, impounded cars are held for 48 hours and are released after the owner pays a holding fee.

"Some people are aware of our ability to impound cars," Mr Stevens said.

"However, it often comes as a surprise to people detected using their vehicles in the wrong way. But this is a very real lesson that delivers a message about responsible driving."

Mr Stevens said the figures coincided with the ages of people dying on our roads.

"Driving is inherently risky but the risk magnifies substantially when you drive recklessly or dangerously and, from a policing perspective, we will target people who drive in this manner," he said.

Hoons only have to be caught driving recklessly once for police to take their cars.

"You would have to be involved in some sort of racing activity or speed trial, doing wheel spins, revving your engine or causing your tyres to create excessive amounts of noise," Mr Stevens said. "Driving on an oval or reserve can get you into trouble."

Excessive noise, including a loud car stereo "to the point of recklessness", also could be enough for police to seize a vehicle.

Vehicle seizures are included in a new police initiative announced this week requiring officers to each pull over 20 extra cars a year.

"We are just looking for our officers to be more vigilant and take action when they see poor driving," Mr Stevens said.

Wonder what that holding fee is?

Your car can be impounded for engine noise??? These are the kind of rules that will be abused by SOB police men/women.

On the melb news tonight they said of the 2000+ cars impounded so far under the new hoon laws over 50% were owned by P Platers....

(and 50% were commodores.. )

2 Things:

1) I don't like being referred to as a "stupid kid".
2) You were young once too! You telling me you never went to a house party that went til 4am with music all night?

I can understand your frustration, but the term "stupid kids" is going to far! I'm sure they don't like you starting your XR8 in the early morning when they are recovering.

I want to know where they get that they have impounded cars belonging to 14 year olds from, 14 is too young to even have a learners permit so presumably they shouldn't be on the roads at all. And in the case that they were wouldn't that be a different offence all together?

LOL at revving!. I would love to hear why peoples cars get impounded for revving?. Most likely reason would be because they broke traction (which is understandable), but realistically that quote listed above contradicts itself. There is no risk in revving? If the car exceeds the DB limit or you drive the car in a "hoon" like matter, then they should re-state there phrase meant by revving. All cars have to rev to work.......!. A camry revving its little heart out trying to get up to 100 on a freeway can get impounded?. Im pretty sure revving goes in compliance for traction loss (its a tripple wammy law breaker for an action, one for traction loss, wheel noise and revving). :yeees:

"We are just looking for our officers to be more vigilant and take action when they see poor driving," Mr Stevens said.

If only they would catch the people who use their phones while driving, who are all over the road or the taxi that parks in the middle of a busy street to purposely hold up traffic or the car that is weaving all over the road or the soarer that was doing 80 and weaving in and out of traffic on a busy road on friday night (all of these whom i witnessed on the weekend were all fully licensed drivers).Their focus is for those who have P plates...You guys are all beginning to winge because there are some of you out there that like to occasionally put your foot down, or you might accidently spin your wheels or have your old music to loud or do anyone of those "hooning" acts either on purpose or by accident, well doesnt it feel good to be targeted? Doesnt seem fair hey!..WELCOME to a p platers world!...Your all so quick off the draw to put blame on us and to treat us all the same because of a percentage of hooligans who do the wrong thing, but when it comes to you guys bam dont pick on us etc...I've had enough of double standards here...There is more than one group of ppl on this road, and its time there presence is felt...Why cant the police catch them for a change...So im glad they have brought in the "hoon" laws for that reason atleast its just not more target practice on a big red P.
Also that hotline is going to be trouble we have one here but they put you on a watch list for a few months and send you out a letter. It would be stupid if you were working on your car in your driveway and revving the engine during the day and have a couple of tops turn up and tell you they have to impound it...Legistation has gone down the dunny hole.

The main problem i find with this report is there giving police sweeping powers that the courts would probably just not prosecute decently anyway case in point i got done for a no u-turn at a no right turn sign the judge said it was rather trivial and made me pay 50 bucks that was it 50 bucks oh and the fact i had to waste the courts time and my own by appealing it even after multiple attempts to have it removed before it got to court even to the main body in s.a failed some court fees, so if the cops bring in a kid under the charge of excessive noise due to stereo id believe the judge would more then likely give him the smallest fine or sentence possible.

Steve Bracks brought in these laws in Victoria, nothing to do with Howard. What does Howard have to do with road rules? Its a State issue, not Federal.

You will be only allowed to "drive" electric golf buggies with a full roll cage, the driver must wear a helmet and must be wrapped in 30cm thick foam from neck to toe and you have to be accompanied by a person who has held their opens for at least 50 years.

Well it seems you have got me there...
But since howard has been in is when these rediculious things have started!
Well maybe the vic's & every other state should try and fix these things because our state is following your examples like a lil lost sheep...
But in all seriousness if we dont stop this soon its going to only get worse because they will find out what they can get away with and what they cant and atm its revenue raising. Its all in the name of safety, but is it really..most of you know the answer to that question,The figures speak for themselves...

The first step that needs to be taken in stopping this rubbish is to take shows ACA and Today Tonight off the air for ever. These shows have by and large been responsible for the term "hoon" becoming common use.

My old man and I were going up a long hill on the way home as we have done all our lives and he was in his new 100 series Turbo diesel Landcruiser and I was following him in the T3. Now we were doing 110km/h, he was pulling away as I didn't want to get caught exceeding the maximum allowable limit in WA, and this was just as the hoon laws came into effect in WA.

My old man is 56 and drives a Turbo Diesel Landcruiser- he used to race cars and knows how to push this 2.2t barge up the hill, and I am now 27 and drive a Bright blue lowered T3 with racing stripes.

If someone had seen us going up the hill, who do you think would have been dobbed in? Yes, they can do that here.

These shows cast "hoons" in a very generalised fashion and it ****es me off something chronic. my old man is a bigger rev head than I'll ever be and I guarantee I'd be the one to come off second best in this example........

Society is becoming unbearable.
