Remote car starter

hi just want to know if anyone has installed a remote car starter, i have an xr6 turbo and thinking about putting one in if it is possible.

had one on my work car they are great on really cold winters mornings when the ice is all over the car and you can kick it in the guts and have another coffee while you wait for it to de ice its self

I have fitted alarms with the option but never enabled it.

Once saw an VK take of into a group of people when the owner hit start whilst it was in gear!

I'd never enable it.

Besides, there is no need for it.

Sure starting it before you get in on cold mornings is good to warm you and glaze your bores.

IIRC leaving a vehicle unattended whilst running is actually illegal. The same law applies to turbo timers.

Just found this, apparently turbo timers are not illegal in Vic anymore. This could also be applied to remote start too!!

And not to mention if your car gets stolen your insurence company will not pay out if you have a remote start fitted, may as well leave your keys inside the car.

I think remote start vehicles only let enough fuel to the engine just for idling. I could be wrong.

But as mentioned... I thought remote start was illegal in Australia. A few Jap imports have this fitted to warm the car up on cold days etc.

Last time I checked the ADR's (Australian Design Rules for road vehicles) there was a stipulation that the car should not be able to run without a key in the ignition. There was exception for turbo timers on heavy vehicles.
Has this changed ? Don't know.

This is why both Turbo timers and remote starts are/were a no-no

That said, if you have one it has to be properly installed. i.e. is won't allow the engine to run unless park brake is applied and transmission is in Neutral/Park.
This stops it 'running away' and also stops somebody trying to make off with it: They put it in gear, engine stops.

Yeah that sounds about right. I just heard in passing conversation that remote starters were illegal.

Having a car running without the keys in the ignition is a defect. So what you have said sounds correct.

i had installed one in my last car, which was part of an alarm system which had turbo timer and remote start. It was great, and they are foolproof if you wire them correctly.

Being manual, it would only allow remote start if the car had been shut down via the turbo timer (and so it would know it wasn't in gear, if the doors were opened anytime after this, it would self-disable the remote start option). I guess if you left your windows down and put it into gear by reaching through the window then there could be chaos but who leaves there car parked up with the windows open?
Also, if i remember correctly, if you dropped the handbrake without 'enabling' the key in the ignition it would cut the engine (to avoid driving without the key).

i say go for it, pretty easy to wire up if you follow the instructions. the instructions for mine were in terrible Chinglish and had to read them for ages to know what they were trying to say!

Well except for all the old falcons and holdens from the early 60s and before where you could remove the keys and stop start or drive the car from the "unlocked" position.

Like the "if it does not have seatbelts originally fitted you don't have to wear them" loophole, you will not get rolled but it is still a bit silly....

What about new cars you start with a push of a button whilst the keys are within a certain range? There is no key in ignition possible. Does this flout the ADR?

Never used one of them but I'd imagine you'd have to be pretty much inside the car for it to work.

I recal watching a top gear episode where they test this and the car and be driven about 50m from the keys.

I don't know, I know that Mercedes-Benz have been using a keyless start system for over 10 years (since the W220 S-Class's debut in 1999), and MB would not have included the feature in models headed to Australia if it was illegal.

We had 2 with the Aurion TRD's as our cars - the last ones before they ditched them and went back to the Commofalcons
We done a trick I unlocked the car after watching TG one night and a collegue got into it started it with the push button ond drove it away but it only went about 10 mtrs
