alternator bearing stuffed

my alternator bearing stuffed up the other day just checking if it is possible to replace the bearing or if im up for a new alternator.

Yes; but a new or rebuilt exchange alternator might be easier, not much more expensive and will last much longer.

i don`t think they`ve got to the throw away stage yet, yes you should be able to replace the bearings , if i remember correctly you need to pull it down remove bearings with a puller or a press, ....ahah! check this out good ole youtube, there are many other clips, this gives you a rough idea ;)

Not a bad video but I would replace all, rather than relube any bearings. Also as the worn bearing have often spun in the aluminium seat, and no longer fit as tightly as they should, it pays to use Loctite or Permatex Bearing retainer compound to retain the new bearings in their seats.

In any event, I no longer bother to replace the bearings in alternators, as I've always found that usually 12 to 18 months after the bearings are replaced the alternator fails - it seems the overheating from the worn bearings fatigues the stator and or rotor wiring and the fail. So now I just get an exchange alternator.

Hey aussieblue, that alternator is for au2/3 etc, so what's the diff with the au1 alternator. tried to find answer in a forum search, its all over the place. Particularly the 2 wire plug -I know the plug might be different shape depending on brand of alt, but that's no problem, I can always change the wiring.
My main concern is whether the 2 wires have exactly the same function, regardless of brand.

Usually the two wires serve the same purpose but the difference in alternators between models is usually about pulleys and mounts so a later model may not easily be retrofitted. Someones else here who has tried should know. There are other AU-1 alternators on ebay.

AU1 Visteon alternators were very hard to repair

AU2 and up Mitsubishi alternatore can be pulled apart in 10 minutes
the main front bearing just taps in and is retained by a cap, the rear one does need a small puller, brushes can be changed, so can the regulator

I always regrease bearings, haven't bought one for years, do them every 100000kms, or if you get power steering oil in them

AU1 different to 2 and 3
BA different again
BF different again
