Servicing and Coronavirus

I want to get my FGX serviced at the dealer, but that doesn't appear to conform to the Coronavirus restrictions In Vic. Ford dealer tells me to come in it will be ok and I will go. But, does anyone know the current rules for getting your car serviced? Doesn't get a mention in any of the advice I've read in the media?

Drop you car off, get it serviced and collect.

Wipe the steering wheel and door handle down with disinfectant if you feel it necessary.

They are in the business of servicing cars, fines are huge if they are going against any rules in place.

I also assume car servicing centres are deemed 'essential'.

Yes business as usual for service departments - aside from hygiene expectations of responsible nature.

Some dealers (ours included) are offering a pick up and drop off service too to ensure no service booking cancellations.

As above. Ford dealers have steps in place to provide customer and worker safety.

Mechanical businesses are essential services so are allowed to remain open.
Every mechanical shop I know has safeguards in place to protect staff and customers, if you are truly concerned then maybe find a small business that is operating safe practices

Had the wife's car done in NSW yesterday.
The car before me was sprayed inside at pickup.
I declined that beautiful service, and ran the risk!!

I don't think anyone has really answered jackute23's question.

Whilst the service centres may be open, in Vic you are only permitted to leave your house for 4 reasons:

• Seeking medical services or providing care
• Essential shopping
• Exercise
• To work

You run the risk of being fined if you are caught out of your house for a reason outside of those above. I can't see getting a car serviced is in there.

If, on the other hand, you could combine the dropping of the car off to the place of service whilst you were doing one of the above activities, that would be ok. Or see if the service centre will pick the car up from your place, as others have highlighted some places are doing.

Personally, I wouldn't risk getting fined of up to $1,652 just to get my car serviced.

Having your car serviced on time forms part of the warranty requirements, so if the car was still under warranty and was actually due (or overdue) for the service, you may be able to get away with it.

But, the above is splitting hairs a bit. Again, I wouldn't take the risk of taking it to the workshop myself just for the service. Include it in another approved activity or come up with some other arrangement, iMHO.

Servicing, repairs and purchasing is essential , if you think this is not the case then the car dealerships would have been closed down as the government would not care about warranty obligations as they have been happily shutting down businesses.
Do you realise a lot of retail shops are still open for trading.

Take your car there, stay away from the germy bastards, pick it up later in the arvo, clean your car with disinfectant or whatever you deem fit. No one will fine you, you won’t spread any germs, everyone is happy.

Or don’t.

Or get a mobile mechanic and provide them with hand sanitizer.

It would be much “safer” than doing your shopping regarding germs etc.

And there's the rub. The Feds are trying to keep people working and in business and the states are saying stay home (don't go shopping and let people go broke?)

I don't know of anyone who has been stopped just to ask where they're going.

Try tell that to the precious ones who like to service their cars under the recommended service intervals

If you have new car warranty the powertrain component will be void pretty quickly if you skip a service interval. One of mine went in today, the dealer has an after hours drop off/pick up system using lock boxes which limits exposure somewhat.

Depending on the component and whether or not it can be proven that the service interval was the cause of the failure.

My dealer is wrapping steering wheels in cling wrap as well as the (now) usual wiping of touch points.

My FGX is now due for a service. It doesn't do many Km's so at this stage I am not taking it in for it to drowned in Glen20. It can wait till this crisis has calmed.

Considering ScoMo mentioned his family going to get jigsaw puzzles as being essential then I would think that it could be reasonably argued that having your vehicle serviced is essential and a valid reason for leaving your home.

I work for a car parts retail and trade company. Full steam ahead for the moment.

I beg to differ. Service intervals are key times for checking things like brakes, lights etc. I had my ranger serviced last week, I’m an essential service and still have to keep working and it was due. Many businesses won’t be around in a few months if we don’t keep supporting them. They were highly professional with cleaning it before and after they touched it.
