POLICE have used satellite technology to nab an alleged car thief in Perth. A police spokesman said the 20-year-old man allegedly broke into a Yangebup home, in Perth's southern suburbs, at about 2am (WST), and stole the keys to a Holden Calais. The car's owner car contacted the manufacturer, which activated the vehicle's global positioning system (GPS), the spokesman said. Police tracked the vehicle to an address in the southern suburb of White Gum Valley and found the car parked on the front lawn. The man was due to face Fremantle Magistrates' Court today charged with one count of aggravated burglary and one count of car theft. |

Been around for years.
My wifes WRX has one fitted and also my XR8. Some insurance companies give a reduction in premium for high profile cars with these fitted. The cars can also be remotely disabled (under police instruction) if required. The only drawback we have found is that if the car is not driven for 1-2 weeks the battery gets sucked dry unless connected to a trickle charger.

All we have to do now is convince the manufacturers to place remote destruct explosives in the car.

how much does a gps sensor cost to be fitted. I currently have a gps unit that i use with my PDA to get satelite navigation but it only works when the pda is plugged in to the unit.

As for insurance, They can demand fitment of tracking before insuring particular vehicles in particular suburbs. The other catch is insurance will demand 3rd party monitoring for rebates to be given, so rebate minus ongoing costs = $0. GPS is only one of the technologies used, there are several systems. The Holden Assist system does use GPS/GSM for communication. There is lots of brilliant hardware out there, but the upstart companies basing themselves on theft tracking of private vehicles have a somewhat dubious business survivability record. Most vehicle tracking is based around commercial fleet and transport vehicles and nothing to do with theft protection. As for loading the car with explosives that's not necessary. I've often thought of a few mods to the tracker logic and a quick link to the fly by wire throttle. If Bilal and Moustafa think they are a good steerer behind the wheel of a stolen car, lets see their skill with a wide open throttle. Sadly such mods are frowned on by authorities as is disableing of the vehicle by 3rd party monitoring unless under police instruction. |

Think of Sat nav as a talking Street directory 1998 edition. The Vehicle tracking is a combination of tracking and communication such as GPS/GSM. Some components can be shared between the two systems but often are not. |

Mine isn't. But it will limit functionality. Some of the systems are radio based and will be useless even in the outer suburbs. And then there are the reception holes in tunnels, car-parks etc that effect all systems. |

My uncles M3 has the remote-disable thing.. someone tried to carjack him (well basically he was outside of car with engine running talking to someone, man runs up pulls a knife says get out of the way, jumps in drives off).. police followed the car with security companies help, then cut the fuel and locked the doors remotely.. thieving bastard was up a smelly creek without a paddle in sight
![]() Guy ended up getting the book thrown at him.. caught a judge on a bad day.. so we were laughing for weeks ![]() This was like 4 years ago or something? dunno.. a fair while back.. in balmain/glebe area somewhere. |
