Was thinking the other day about some of the old language/decriptions we still use to describe modern cars and parts.
Dash'board' - there no longer made of wood Boot - sounds that term belongs with the horse and carriage days Bonnet- no idea where that one came from Mudguard - from the days when cars had wooden wheels Bumper- not any more - its often hard now to distinguish this from the body Glovebox -apart from snow skiers and my nanna - who else wears these anymore Rear Parcel shelf - no room for a parcel anymore Grill - still sorta relevent Bout time we moved with times and changed these. |

I think people still use bumpers as their name suggests. I wonder where the alternate name front/rear bar came from but.
Still, I reckon that we've got better names than the yanks.

Dash is the panel that holds the instruments. Bonnet was what they put over the cart bit of the horse and cart to keep the sun and rain off, like a baby's bonnet, kinda obvious that one. Grille is the LEAST relevant as its usually just for decoration and cold air is drawn in from below the "bumper" er front bar. |

what about "birthday sill' the panel between the rear glass and the bootlid, when the boot doesn't go all the way to back glass.

Dash board goes back to the horse and cart days.
Originallly its the panel that stops the flick up from the horses as they trot/gallop down the road. Think of the rubbish thats thrown up as a horse/deer goes "dashing through the snow". Chris |
